DARLINGTON, S.C. – Jeff Gordon said Friday he was not surprised by the incident between Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the closing laps of last Saturday’s race at Richmond International Raceway.
Gordon was Busch’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports for several years and is Earnhardt Jr.’s teammate this season.
“I thought it was typical Kyle Busch – just racing too hard,” Gordon said at Darlington Raceway, site of Saturday night's Dodge Charger 500 Sprint Cup race. “He just drove in too deep. Turn 3, when you’re on the inside, you’ve got to be the conservative one. You can’t be the aggressor. The guy on the outside, you know he’s going to hold you, he’s going to pinch you.
“If you don’t want to wreck, then you’ve got to check up a little early and try to get a run on him up off the corner and then drive down into Turn 1 and get him. But you can’t try to outrun a guy into Turn 3, not when you’re on the inside like that.”
Gordon was asked about a possible rivalry developing between Busch and the Earnhardt Jr., the driver who replaced him at Hendrick. Gordon said Busch shouldn’t let any bad feelings over what happened affect what happens on the track.
“I can sense that Kyle would have some hard feelings,” Gordon said. “I think he feels like he got the raw end of the deal, and he might be right. I don’t think that should transfer over to the race track, but you never know with Kyle. Those are a couple of his downsides. He’s a tremendous race car driver, and that’s proven itself. But sometimes he lets himself get the best of him.”
Gordon isn’t saying that’s what happened at Richmond, but he said he could see that happening at some point.
