Jeff Gordon is raring to go for Sunday’s Allstate 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
And who can blame him?
Not only is Gordon the all-time NASCAR Cup wins leader at Indianapolis with four victories, but for the driver who grew up in nearby Pittsboro, Ind., going to Indy is like going home.
“As a kid, I remember taking the bus around here, going to the museum and just thinking how cool it would be to race on the track one day,” Gordon said. “The opportunity to race here in open-wheeled cars never materialized, and I chose to pursue racing stock cars in NASCAR.”
Four Cup championships and 81 wins later, the choice proved to a shrewd one. And nowhere on the Cup circuit has Gordon’s decision been more fruitful than Indy, where he scored his second career win in the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994.
“That is still one of the most memorable moments of my career,” Gordon said. “I thought I’d lost that chance to race here. Then, to get that chance in a stock car and to win was just incredible. Now I get the opportunity to race here every year, and I’ve been fortunate to win the event four times.”
Gordon has also posted three poles, eight top-fives and 11 top-10s in 14 Indy starts.
This season, the Hendrick Motorsports driver comes to the 2.5-mile track seeking his first win of 2008 and hoping to further cement his position for the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup.

A fifth Indy victory would also break the mark Gordon shares with open-wheel drivers Al Unser, Rick Mears and A.J. Foyt who each have four wins at the track - all in the Indianapolis 500.
"There is something about this place that gets me fired up," Gordon said.

Jul 24, 2008 at 5:34 PMI am not sure who wrote this above article but Jeff Gordon did not come to Indianappolis as a young bus rider, he was coming from California as an accomplished driver ready for the USAC trail that his step dad pursued for him moving there.
