It's a question that Jeff Gordon gets asked repeatedly during three weeks out of the year: Why haven't you won here?
Texas Motor Speedway (two races) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (one race) are the only two tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit where Gordon, the four-time Cup champion and victor in 81 races, has never won.
And given Gordon's success on other 1.5-mile speedways, it seems slightly mystifying as to why he's never broken through at Texas.
"We've been close several times the past couple of years," said Gordon, who gets another chance to add the Texas track to his victory collection in Sunday's Samsung 500. "But whether it was an electrical problem while leading or me hitting the Turn 4 wall while leading, we haven't won."
Gordon has five top-five finishes and seven top-10s in 14 career Texas starts but says Texas "is a very tricky track."
"It's also hard to find the right combination of aerodynamics, horsepower, mechanical grip and setup to get comfortable with the speeds we carry through the corner," he said.
Gordon does have three consecutive top-10s at the Fort Worth track, and finished fourth in this race last season. And from 2001-04, he reeled off four straight top-fives there.
Only the win has eluded him.
Last April, Gordon scratched Phoenix International Raceway off his list and finally won there in his 17th start.
Could No. 15 at Texas hold similar magic this year?
