Goodyear plans to work with NASCAR to resolve Indy tire issues

Goodyear's Greg Stucker says that the tire manufacturer will test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway again, most likely at some point this year.

INDIANAPOLISGoodyear officials will most likely test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before this year ends in an effort to remedy the tire problems that marred Sunday's Allstate 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the track.

After Dale Earnhardt Jr., Mark Martin, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth and Juan Pablo Montoya each had tire problems early in the race, NASCAR officials opted to continue to use competition cautions to check the tire wear. The sanctioning body had announced prior to the race plans to throw the caution flag on lap 15, then continued the practice throughout the event, with the final competition caution coming on lap 150.

Goodyear officials said that the combination of the Indy track surface and NASCAR's new car caused the tires to wear quickly and that they'll look into the problem.

"Obviously, the tread wear didn't improve as we thought it would for the first of the afternoon," Goodyear spokesman Greg Stucker said. "Actually we don't have the answer as far as why that didn't happen, so we've got to go back and look at that and try to figure out how to make it better."

He noted this was the same compound that teams used in this event a year ago. Sunday's race marked the debut of NASCAR's new car at the 2.5-mile track, though it is the 20th series race featuring the model.

"This was the same compound we raced last year and the wear improved over the course of the day last year to the point where we could run the full stops," Stucker said. "That didn't happen today, so we need to understand why."

He said Goodyear will work to assess the cause of the problems.

"We're going to do our best to try to turn it around, we're going to talk with the race track, figure out what can we do about the race track, try to understand a little bit more, try to work with NASCAR and try to figure out what to expect from the car and the teams," he said. "We're the tire supplier, we take it onto our shoulders, we've got to improve it, but … it's the package, so we need to understand the whole thing together and try to make it better."

Obviously, no one wanted to see a race plagued with cautions, especially not the series' tire supplier. Still, the cautions were preferable for everyone involved opposed to having cars with tires blowing out during the race. Stucker said the cautions were the best short-term solution.

"I don't think anybody wants that," Stucker said. "I'm sure there's other things that could have happened, but we worked with NASCAR and the teams and tried to manage it with the inventory we had and just try to make it so everybody got to the end, everybody had the same chance."

He pointed out that nobody was at fault for the problems, but that this is something the group will work diligently to resolve. Goodyear held a tire test at the track in April, but opted not to bring the tire from that session because of concerns about grip. Last year, the Cup drivers had a full-field test at the track, but the lack of that this season was not an issue, Stucker said.

"We had full-scale testing as far as we're concerned, I mean we had a tire test," he said. "We didn't have an open test like we did last year, certainly we didn't have as many cars on the race track as we did last year, so again that's a difference. But you try to use all that [in] your decisions."

This was the worst race ever! It wasn't even a race until about the last 10 laps. I understand that they kept throwing the caution to check the tires for saffety reasons but it still made for a really bad race.

The race wasn't all that bad untill Nascar kept throwing the compitition cautions. But Nascar did a very smart thing by throwing those cautions so the teams could check the tire but Goodyear has got to get their act back together or they might not be back in Nascar next year.

The worst racing i've ever seen. Once again Goodyear drops the ball, maybe we should start listening to Tony Stewart. If nascar wants to start racing 15 lap heats lets at least move it to dirt!!!!

Can someone please tell me why this wasn't researched BEFORE the race? Goodyear is solely responsible for bringing the right tire. If they needed a open test, then they should have lobbied NASCAR until that happened.

I can guarantee one thing. If the right leadership had been in place (like Bill France, Jr.) this never would have happened. I understand why they had to run the race they way they did. What I don't understand is how they got to that point in the first place.

    Totally unforgivable.

$1,700 for ONE SET of those goodyear tires folks! Are they going to refund the money to the teams? While they're at it, are they going to refund those fans that paid to go to that abomination of a race? Folks, don't give in to the media & Nascar and the smoke and mirrors they are scrambling to pull out to distract you from what happened today! Nascar just embarassed themselves on THE MOST FAMOUS TRACK IN ALL OF RACING. This is a HUGE deal!!!! Sadly, the spin machine is already in over-drive. I just heard a commentator on Speed with the nerve to say "Yes, the cautions slowed things down a LITTLE, but it was still a great race." What??? A little???.... a great race??????? Liars!!!!! The drivers, etc are simply holding their noses and tolerating what happened in the hopes of not adding to a SERIOUS situation which is already going to have SEVERE ramifications. Just thinking of what this means at a time when the economy is this bad is STAGGERING!

Mr Dirt is correct. He and I don't always agree, however, This race was RIDICULOUS. Really it wasn't a race. Nascar is to blame. They are the governing body. This should have been worked out before the season even began. Whatever amount of testing is necessary, MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! Please don't give me the excuse of new car, diamond grinding, flat track, hard handling cars, etc... NO EXCUSES.

Sad day for all NA$CAR fans. THE Speedway should give everyone holding a ticket to todays race? a free ticket to next years race!! Goodyear should not charge teams for reject tires, and NA$CAR should hold a news conferance and say "fan we screwed up, Sunday July 27 we put on a very bad show, we beg you to give us another chance to earn your loyalty." We know none of this will happon, but it should. France wants to return to our roots, HA in the old days Goodyear and France both would have had to have an escort out of town. THANKS BOB STAFFORD

This race was an absolute disgrace. As bad as it was for us at home watching (and I'm already sick of Andy P. & DJ), imagine having paid to attend the race. If attendance has dropped at Indy the last 2 years, I bet you won't have any problems getting tickets next year. NASCAR needs to show Goodyear the door and give Firestone a chance. No NASCAR team should have to pay a dime for the tires provided by Goodyear today as it would be impossible to argue that this was a "racing" time.
The NFL cranks up in a few more weeks and I won't be wasting my time watching bad races, endless commercials and listening to awful reporters in the booth.

NASCAR and Goodyear said they used the same tire this year that they did last year with the old car. Have they forgotten that the new car has more downforce on the right side than the old car? They already saw this same problem earlier this year, I think it was at Atlanta. NASCAR and Goodyear screwed up and hurt a lot of teams in the points standings. And NASCAR gets mad when the drivers complain about this new car? The drivers really need to get vocal this time.

Jeff Bosch brings up an interesting point about the drivers reaction (or lack there of) to the situation. Please don't eat the garbage the media is feeding you about how noble and righteous all the drivers are being for keeping their cool post-race under these circumstances. The FACT is that everyone involved knew after PRACTICE that this is what was going to happen!!!! They KNEW the ramifications of what was going to take place on racing's biggest stage, and so they premeditated a garage-wide consensus to keep the complaining to a minimum! That alone folks, let's you know JUST HOW SERIOUS this situation is. I'm not saying Nascar urged anyone to keep quiet. I'm saying everyone in this sport is thinking with their wallets right now. Maybe, the fans should start doing the same.

The drivers comments were all nicey-nice because of Helton's earlier private "Don't say how bad the new car really IS" speech to them that threatened the drivers who told the truth.
I wonder how much Brian France and Mike Helton both drew on their VAST prior racing experience when mandating this new car's handling characteristics design !!

Both NASCAR and Goodyear dropped the ball big-time on this one. Both organizations were aware of a tire problem that had existed since last year. The introduction of the COT to Indy should have triggered a no-brainer open tire testing session early this year to address the problem that the new car would only make even worse. The drivers, owners, fans and the TV audience deserved a far better race than what happened at the Brickyard last Sunday. I hope that NASCAR will stop tinkering with their sport before it kills its golden goose! Cars need to retain the distinctive shapes of their manufacturers, tires should be the same for every race track, and, if one manufacturer can squeeze 15 more HP out of its engine legally, then let the others go to work in their R&D departments to make their motors more competitive. Already NASCAR has become dangerously close to becoming a rubber stamp of the IROC series, and we all know how big of a crowd THAT competition draws.

"Goodyear officials will most likely test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway " Ya think??? Most likely??? I paid good money to see that "race", I most likely won't be back next year. NASCAR is screwing up this sport and making a soap opera out of it. They have as much credibility as WWF. Why all the drivers aren't screaming, why the announcers weren't screaming, why no one cares that the FANS (you remember us NASCAR? The ones that PAY to see "races"!) were/ARE screaming is a complete shock and speaks volumes as to the true intentions and focus of Helton and crew. I'd love to get my ticket money back, the gas money to get to the track, and the BEER money to attempt to make me forget what was happening in front of my eyes (nope, there wasn't enough beer for that to happen). Great job NASCAR, you really need to get involved in politics, you've got the screwing the constituents and blaming everyone else for your problems down pat!

Let me just put in my two cents worth. The drivers are not allowed to complain, even Tony Stewart is quite this time. Remember Atlanta this year when Tony spoke his mind. Now Tony is an owner and he is not about to make waves for himself or his new sponsors for next year. Face it this was not a race this weekend it was just the largest robbery of all time. Over two hundred thousand people had their money stolen from them. The guilty parties are NASCAR and Goodyear. If any of us think we are going to get our money back then I want whatever you are drinking or smoking. I have not been a fan for that many years so it will not be that hard for me to give it up. Checkers would have been more exciting than this past weekend at Indianapolis. I just can't get over everyone trying to make excuses for Goodyear and NASCAR. It was not a good race no matter what all the professionals say, remember they still want to get paid and NASCAR tells everyone what they can say and what they can't.
