Chip Ganassi Racing officials announced Wednesday that Dario Franchitti will compete in seven more Nationwide Series races this season, beginning with this weekend’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Franchitti was a regular on the Sprint Cup circuit before a lack of sponsorship forced Ganassi to shut down the No. 40 team. The defending IndyCar champion made his NASCAR debut last year and has competed in 11 Nationwide races this season, with a best finish of sixth at Las Vegas.

In addition to Watkins Glen, Franchitti will drive the team’s No. 40 Nationwide Dodge at Michigan, Bristol, Richmond, Kansas, Charlotte and Phoenix.

“I’m really looking forward to going to the Glen for my first Nationwide race there, as it’s a track I have always enjoyed,” Franchitti said. “The No. 40 Fastenal Dodge has been quick all year, and as a team we’re really looking forward to continued success throughout the rest of the season. I have confidence in [crew chief] Brad Parrott and the boys that we can get it done at Watkins Glen, particularly after a very productive and enjoyable test at Road Atlanta last week.”

Franchitti has three starts at the Glen, all in the Indy Racing League. He finished third in the 2007 race there.

I think Franchitti has gotten a raw deal from Chip. If Scott Dixon or Dan Weldon decided to do NASCAR, Chip would find room for them.
