Travis Geisler, who as a driver dabbled in what was then the NASCAR Busch Series in 2004, has replaced Chris Carrier as crew chief of the Penske Racing No. 77 Sprint Cup car driven by Sam Hornish.
A mechanical engineering graduate from Vanderbilt, Geisler, 27, had been the race engineer for Ryan Newman at Penske since the start of the 2007 season.
The No. 77 team, with rookie Hornish as the driver, is 34th in the owner standings and 23 points from dropping out of the top 35. Carrier, who had been crew chief at Morgan-McClure Motorsports, joined Penske at the start of the season.
“We appreciate the effort Chris has put into this role,” Penske Racing president Tim Cindric said in a statement. “However, this is a performance oriented business and when the results are not meeting the expectations, we have to make changes.
“Travis is another example of our willingness to promote from within. His depth of knowledge as a racer and engineer, as well as his proven ability to work with both drivers and crews, will be a great addition [to the team].”
A Pittsburgh native, Geisler began racing go-karts at age 14 and eventually ran 12 races in 2004 while also being the team engineer for DCT Motorsports in NASCAR’s No. 2 series. He remained with the team through 2005 before going to Robert Yates Racing in 2006.
Ben Atkins will replace Geisler as the race engineer on Newman’s team.
