Former NASCAR Cup champion Alan Kulwicki was one of seven people inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America Wednesday night during ceremonies at the Fillmore Theater in Detroit.

Kulwicki, the 1992 Cup champion, died in a plane crash while en route to Bristol, Tenn., just 138 days after clinching the title with a runnerup up finish in the Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

He was the series’ first owner/driver to win the championship since Richard Petty in 1979. The 1986 rookie of the year, Kulwicki made 207 career starts between 1985-93, winning five times with 38 top-five and 75 top-10 finishes. He also won 24 poles.

Also inducted were drag racing’s Dale Armstrong, Joie Chitwood (Historic), Jeremy McGrath (Motorcycles), Ken Squier (At Large), Jerry Titus (Sports Cars) and Rich Vogler (Open Wheel).

Team owner Chip Ganassi served as Honorary Chairman for the 22nd annual induction ceremony.

The Motorsports Hall of fame is located inside the Detroit Science Center.
