CONCORD, N.C. - As much as Clint Bowyer would like to win Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway, half of his battle is seemingly already won.
That's because this is the first time in three Cup seasons that the Richard Childress Racing driver doesn't have to race his way in with a strong finish in the Sprint Showdown earlier in the night.
“That qualifying race is always a wild one and I just as soon not be a part of it," said Bowyer, who finished sixth in the showdown last season.
But the Kansas native is glad to a part of the All-Star Race, a non-points-paying affair that is always one of the most anticipated on the Sprint Cup tour.
Saturday will mark the event debut for Bowyer, who earned a spot in the field with his victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last September.
Bowyer, who had not won a Cup race at this time last year, has also since gone to victory lane at Richmond International Raceway, two weekends ago.
But a victory in the all-star race would be just as special.
“It’s a big deal," he said. "It’s a neat week. It’s a neat week for everybody. It’s more of a team aspect, especially on TV and media coverage-wise, they get a little piece of the spotlight. A lot of fun this week, obviously a big prize at the end of the day."
The prize that Bowyer spoke of is a hefty $1,012,975 winner's purse. Does the typically more-conservative driver plan on racing any differently given the high stakes?
Maybe not. But don't rule it out.
“I mean, you know it’s a million to win," he said. "That’s a lot of cash.”
