Edwards' winning team could face penalties

LAS VEGASCarl Edwards and the Las Vegas-winning No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing team face possible penalties after NASCAR discovered the lid from the oil tank was off after the race.

That is a violation of NASCAR rules similar to infractions found after Nationwide Series qualifying at Daytona last month. Five teams were caught with oil tank covers that were loose after qualifying at Daytona and all were fined, docked points and had their crew chiefs suspended.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said he wasn’t sure where the oil tank cover was found, only that it was off the tank. The victory still stands, he said.

“We’ll take the 99 back to the [Research and Development]  Center [in Concord, N.C.], take a look at it there, and if there are any actions that will be taken, we’ll make that announcement as we normally do next week,” Poston said.

Mentioned Drivers: Carl Edwards

is this somthing that the crews are doing to gain an advantage or something being done by the racecar as there have been a number of these lately?

Taking the lid off the box that surrounds the oil tank would allow air from underneath the vehicle to travel up into the vehicle instead of travelling out the back. It has the potential of increasing downforce.

I don;'t think Carl Edwards intentionally meant to cheat, but somebody on his team did. I don't think those lids could be "off" without some tampering. As the driver and leader of the team, I think Edwards needs to admit it was wrong and except the penalties, that winning by possibly having an advantage, bring him. I also think that NASCAR needs to take the win away from him. NASCAR would do that to just about any other driver or are they playing favorites.

The team has made a mistake with tampering and should face the penalty and admit wrong doing, or be labled a cheater by the rules.

cheating is cheating, and any team that does it should have the win taken away.

Is it possible that the lid wasn't tight and came off during the race? If it was, could it have been an error? Does it definitely have to mean it was done on purpose? If it was intentional, why does the driver get fined and lose points? Chances are pretty good that the driver doesn't know about these crazy things someone on the team does. Shouldn't it be the team's owner who has to "pay the price"? Maybe someone can explain to me the reasoning behind this type of penalty.

Oh, my gosh, a Hendrick car did not win. So lets find something to give Roush Fenway a black eye and get then back in line.

I think that after Reasearch & Development finishes with their exam & if they find that Roush was intentionally cheating the #99 car should have to forfeit the win.

ask robbie gordon.a victim from the manufacturer with the wrong part, big fine, point, suspension and he didn't even race the car.if the cover was off, point, suspension and fines are appropiate.cheating is cheating.and yes i agree, take a win away and all this will stop.

I used to race years ago. Raced against Shrader & Wallace boys at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City and foe the life of me, I can't see where having a missing oil cap can give more down-force or make a car faster! All I can see is that North American Stock Chevy Association of Racing is just using this against Ford & Roush-Feway!
