WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards is seeking bonus points.
With five races to go before the field for the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup is set, Edwards has four wins. NASCAR awards 10 bonus points for each victory once the Chase begins, but Edwards has only 30 points because he lost the points for his Las Vegas win as part of a penalty for a rule infraction.
Still, he's on solid footing when the Chase begins. Currently third in the standings, he's ready to stop working to get into the Chase and begin preparing for winning the championship in those final 10 races.
Now, as he prepares to race in Sunday's Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen International, he's thinking about a win - and those bonus points.
"These next five races are win at all costs, just get the wins, get the bonus points," said Edwards, who is the series' most recent winner after taking the victory at Pocono Raceway last weekend. "We're not really worried about anything other than that.”
Edwards agrees with other top contenders that the championship race is wide open right now. With some going for wins and others trying to lock into the field, it's impossible to get a solid read on what anyone has right now. He knows that some teams are facing a lot of pressure this weekend - and is glad his is not one of them.
"Our team is really in a position right now where we don’t have to worry too much about having a bad race, but for a lot of the teams, at the tail end of the Chase field, this track’s really important," Edwards said. "You can have such a bad day here through a small mistake that this will be a little bit of a bottleneck. For a lot of guys, there’s a lot of pressure. This is really nice to come here without that pressure because I know how that feels.”
Edwards admits that makes the coming group of races even more exciting since his focus shifts, at least for a few weeks, before his team buckles down once more in an effort to win the championship.
"For instance, this week’s been great," he said. "I know that I’m coming here and all I have to do is try to win the race. I don’t have to worry about points. I’ve got no stress. It’s just go out and have fun, and that’s a real rarity in Sprint Cup competition. You never are able to come to the race track without any stress.”
