If Carl Edwards seems more relaxed than some of his peers this weekend at Richmond International Raceway, it’s probably because he is.
Unlike those battling for the final few spots in the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup, Edwards’ berth in NASCAR’s playoff is secure.
His focus heading into the Sprint Cup Series’ regular-season finale is squarely on winning. A victory would give the Roush Fenway Racing driver 60 bonus points starting off the Chase, just 20 fewer than Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, whose eight victories top all contenders.
A win would also give Edwards a 30-point cushion on the third-place driver.
"I'm looking forward to going to Richmond, especially since we are locked into The Chase,” said Edwards, who was stripped of the 10 Chase bonus points that came with his win at Las Vegas in March after his car failed postrace inspection. “There isn’t much pressure going into Richmond this weekend, so my Office Depot team and I can go out there and just have fun.”
Edwards hasn’t had as much fun as he would have liked in his eight previous starts at the .75-mile Richmond track. He has just three top-10 finishes and no wins.
His average start at Richmond is 10.9, but his average finish is 18.9. His best Richmond result is a sixth, which came in his first start at the facility in 2004.
“Richmond is a challenging track to drive but fun at the same time,” said Edwards, who has won three of the last five Cup races. “The team had a good run there in the spring, and since then my team has made tons of improvements, so I am really confident going into Richmond.”
Edwards placed seventh at Richmond in the spring.
"I feel good about our chances to run well there,” crew chief Bob Osborne said. “With how we ran before the part failure in the fall race last year at Richmond, I am counting on having a good run. We know that anything can happen, but if we can keep mistakes to a minimum, we should have a good run.”
