CONCORD, N.C. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Friday he is a “very impatient” owner, and he’s proved that by firing Mark McFarland and Shane Huffman before either driver got a full year in JR Motorsports’ cars in what is now called the Nationwide Series.
Earnhardt Jr.’s current driver, Brad Keselowski, has said that’s part of driving, performing under the pressure of driving for a big-name owner.
But Friday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, Earnhardt Jr. may have put even more pressure on Keselowski.
“The problem that I run into with Brad is he watches and sees how I act and he thinks that’s how he can act,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “But I’ve earned the right to be a little bit of a [jerk] every once and awhile.
“He thinks he can come in right off the bat and be one, so I have to tell him, ‘Man, you can’t be like that. You’ve got to earn it. People aren’t going to like you just coming in, seven months into the deal and complaining all the time. You’ve got to suck it up for a little while.
“‘It’s no fun, but after about four or five years then you can start being a little more demanding, calling your shots a little more and saying no a whole lot more often.’”
Since the Nationwide Series is off this weekend, Keselowski was at home in Michigan and unavailable for comment.
