MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Aric Almirola, who has a commitment from Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to field the No. 8 Sprint Cup car through next week's race at Texas Motor Speedway, still needs sponsorship for the April 18 race at Phoenix International Raceway.
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing President Steve Lauletta said he had “nothing new to report” when asked if sponsorship had been secured for Almirola and if Almirola was going to be able to go to Phoenix.
Almirola is 36th in the driver standings and 37th in the owners standings heading into the Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 today at Martinsville Speedway.
The 24-year-old Almirola had been scheduled to run the full season at Dale Earnhardt Inc., and after the DEI merger with Chip Ganassi Racing in November, he was named as the driver of the No. 8 car. But the organization has had to put together sponsorship to keep that team going. Guitar Hero Metallica is the sponsor for the car this weekend.
In 23 career Cup starts, Almirola has one top-10 finish – an eighth at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2008.

Mar 29, 2009 at 9:42 PMI like Aric, especially since he's from Tampa, but if I were a company looking to break into NASCAR I wouldn't be inclined to go to EGR and look into sponsoring them. If it were up to me, I'd be more inclined to sponsor a team like the TRG #71 or the RPM #44 or one of those teams that's proven that with the odds against them they could get the job done. So far, Aric's been pretty miserable this season, and my sponsorship money would probably be better off with a team that I know would be able to get into the race and get the results we wanted. Sorry Aric, you got bit by a bad economy combined with your team just not performing.
