Earnhardt Ganassi Racing team co-owner Teresa Earnhardt and driver Martin Truex Jr. were penalized 50 NASCAR Sprint Cup points and crew chief Kevin Manion was fined $50,000 for the Truex car being too low in postrace inspection Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway.

The loss of 50 points dropped Truex from 24th to 26th in the driver standings, with Richard Petty Motorsports’ Elliott Sadler and AJ Allmendinger each moving up a spot.
Manion remains on probation through Dec. 31.
There was no immediate word from the team if it would appeal the penalty.

Nov 10, 2009 at 5:52 PMSeems fitting I guess. Not sure what the point of the penalty was, considering he wasn't that high in the points anyway.

Nov 11, 2009 at 1:27 PMHow did Johnson pass post-race? Oh that's right...they didn't check him, did they? After a car is as tore up as his was, they should be able to go back out there, but should be inspected post-race if they want to keep the points they gained.

Nov 11, 2009 at 2:09 PMNow you're just being ridiculous JUNIEGIRL. We get it. You dislike Johnson, think he is a cheater, think he is an unworthy champion, and so on. I'm starting to understand why Kyle Busch fans dislike the Jr. Nation so much.

Report as AbuseIsn't it a valid point? They go through such rigorous inspections to race, but they can rebuild a car and just go out there and make points. I'm not just talking about Johnson, I'm saying whoever. Points are precious at this stage of the game. Ask Mark Martin.

Nov 11, 2009 at 3:35 PMI also think it would be absurd to require a car that was involved in an accident and not capable of winning a race to go through another rigid inspection since there would be no advantage of winning. Pointless.

Nov 11, 2009 at 3:44 PMDon't you think the penalty of having to rebuild his car and finishing 38th is enough? Has any driver that crashed out and made repairs and came back out so as not to get a DNF ever had to have a post race inspection? Come on, what's the point? Everyone gained on Johnson. They have 2 more races to try to beat him. Enough of the Jimmy bashing. He did nothing wrong. He was the one wronged.

Report as Abuse#6 how was jimmy wronged. if he was as great as everyone asys he should've saved the car at the top of the track instead of turning down and smashing into hornish jr. if anyone was wronged it was hornish jr.

Nov 11, 2009 at 4:23 PMI bet the total value of what was replaced on JJ's car was > 50k - so there is your fine. Yeah, I'm not too concerned about repairing a car like that and getting it back on the track. He lost more laps out on the track and barely could keep it at race minimum speeds.

Nov 11, 2009 at 4:39 PM#5 It wasn't pointless. He didn't lose as many points as he would if he didn't go back on the track. So no, he could not win but there was a points advantage to him going back out. The car should have to pass a basic inspection to retain those points.

Nov 11, 2009 at 5:24 PMBut aren't the inspections to catch teams that are trying to gain an advantage by cheating? To inspect a car that crashed and was rebuilt in the pits or behind the wall would imply that the team crashed on purpose so they could rebuild it. I am sure that if this happened and a driver posted a decent finish they would inspect the car. But he was down 100 plus laps. Maybe the rulebook addresses things like this, but how the heck would we know! It is easier to get into the White House than it is to get into that rulebook.

Nov 11, 2009 at 5:32 PMThe only thing I can think of to say as to why NASCAR does not penalize cars which incur damage is this: Do we really want NASCAR to be scrutinizing every bashed in fender, every broken splitter support, every dented grill, and every dented bumper post race and dolling out fines to all of those cars with any type of damage that no longer exactly fit the templates? If you think its bad with two cars being selected, just think about what it would be like with 43 cars.

Nov 11, 2009 at 6:58 PMI agree with JUNEGIRL. Chad is a notorious cheater, so the car should have been inspected post-race. I think these post-race penalties are stupid at times. Did not Truex's car pass a pre-race inspection? If so then something must have happened to the car during the race to cause it to fall out of spec. There's only so much that the crew can do to the car during a pit stop.

Nov 11, 2009 at 7:03 PMI'm sure Chad was down there wringing his hands, maniacally making certain that every possible possible piece of sheet metal matched known wind tunnel aero specs to make the car super fast. Give me a break. The car barely made minimal speed. The only cars he passed were those unable to return to the track.
