TALLADEGA, Ala. - Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin will remain in a Birmingham, Ala., hospital overnight for observation after a hard crash in Sunday's Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Hamlin was awake and alert after the crash, which occurred on lap 99 of the 188-lap NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race

Hamlin was leading at the time when his Toyota veered a hard right into the Turn 1 wall after blowing a right-front tire. Hamlin gingerly emerged from his car and was assisted to a track ambulance with the help of a stretcher.

"It was quite a shot," said Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs. "It kind of hurt his ankle a little bit, but that should be OK. He has a little headache, so we’re just going to watch him and probably take him into Birmingham [hospital] just to keep an eye on him. But he’s alert and doing well."

Hamlin entered the race 10th in the series standings and was hoping to make up ground in the Chase For The Sprint Cup. Hamlin was one of several drivers to crash as a result of tire issues during the race.

“He feels pretty good, but we’re just going to take precautions and make sure he’s OK," Gibbs said. "I talked to his family and let them know what is going on. It was a scary deal. ... He has a little bit of a headache that’s kind of going away. His ankle got bruised up pretty good, but he should be good. … Any time you get a headache coming out of a wreck like that, they’re going to want to take you [to the hospital]."

Hope Hamlin is alright. What's the deal with tires this season, is it the tires, is it track surface or was it debris? All but one wreak was due to blown tire. hope they figure it all out before next season.

Not a Hamlin fan, but I never want to see a driver hurt. This has to be the worst year for Goodyear and they need to take blame instead of making excuses.
