Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin has been cleared to race in this weekend’s Bank of America 500 Sprint Cup race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway after taking the “hardest hit I have ever taken in a race car” at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend.

Hamlin crashed during the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega and was taken to University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital, where he was released Monday. A tire let go on his No. 11 Toyota and sent Hamlin into the Turn 2 wall.

Hamlin was cleared to race by NASCAR’s consulting physician, Dr. Jerry Petty, earlier this week.

“It was good to get home, get some rest and take it easy this week,” Hamlin said in a news release Wednesday. “I am feeling better everyday and look forward to getting back in the car this weekend. I need to thank everyone at Talladega and at UAB, and also Dr. Petty and the NASCAR medical team for taking care of me. I really appreciate all they did for me and for putting my health above everything else.

“Thanks to all of the fans for their concern and, of course, thanks to everyone at JGR and the No. 11 team who build really safe cars, and that showed last weekend. This sport has made big gains in terms of safety – everything from the cars to the walls and those are big steps in the right direction."

Hamlin will not compete in the Nationwide Series race. He will be replaced in the Braun Racing entry by Dave Blaney.

Glad to read that you're all right Denny. I'm not really a fan of yours, but when any driver takes a hit like you did, (even Jeff Gordon), I'm concerned for their health. Glad to see your good to go.

It's always a scary sight to see someone hit the wall as hard as Denny H. did. I am thankful he did not get injured any worse than he was. I'm not a Denny fan, but concerned about any driver that hits that hard. I would be willing to bet every driver is thankful for the extra safety equipment they are mandated to have. We fans are anyway.
