Sunday's running of the Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Fox scored increased average audience, total audience and household ratings compared to a year ago, according to fast national figures released today by Nielsen Media Research.

The 50th Daytona 500 averaged 17.8 million viewers, a 1 percent improvement over last season (17.5 million). It was also the second
highest-rated and second most-watched 500 ever on Fox, trailing the 2005 race in both stats.

All three NASCAR on FOX events televised during Speedweeks posted improved ratings and viewership.

According to a network news release, 33.5 million Americans watched at least part of the race.

TO MANY COMMERCIALS! The HYPE before the race cheapens the event. Can you imagine "Kool & the Gang" in the pre-activities for THE MASTERS or WIMBLTON. WHY DIDn'T FOX SHOW SOME OF THE FORMER WINNERS AND CARS. 60 seconds is not enough. GREAT FOR RYAN & PENSKI!

FOX has come a long way since they started covering NASCAR. The split screen of the leaders and of action deeper in the field is the best way to try to keep the TV viewers. My driver may not be in the top three, but in the middle of the other 40.

I think ratings were high because of the "50th" party. Yes, I was watching because I am an old hard core fan since the 80's. I've been going to the "500" since then but missed the last 2 including this year. The race was good in the begining and the end and that was it. BORING middle of race. Maybe cut them back to 400 miles, especially with this NEW car. TV coverage was very good. In my opinion, the old NASCAR died the same day Dale, Sr. did and I was there and cried, like everybody else, and I wasn't even a fan of his. I miss the good ole boy's! Rusty,DW,SR,Marlin, Bill, and Schrader too. And now DJ.
