CONCORD, N.C. – Michael Waltrip Racing’s David Reutimann gambled and won in Monday’s rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Running 14th when a caution flag waved for rain on lap 221 of the scheduled 400-lap distance, Reutimann inherited the lead when he stayed on track when the rest of the lead-lap cars pitted for tires. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon Motorsports’ Robby Gordon also remained on the track and went on to finish second and third.
The trio elected not to pit in hopes that the rain might continue and NASCAR would call the race before returning to green-flag conditions.
The gamble paid off.
On lap 227, and before the race could resume, NASCAR threw the red flag for the third time Monday as the rain steadily increased. A couple of hours later - 2 hours, 3 minutes and 44 seconds, to be exact - the race was ruled to be official.
“[Crew chief] Rodney [Childers] said, ‘Let’s just stay out and see how this deal goes,’” Reutimann said of the decision to remain on the track.
The victory gave Reutimann his first triumph in 75 career Cup starts and gave Michael Waltrip his first win as a NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner.
“I felt rain that felt this good once, down at Daytona in ‘03,” said Waltrip, referring to his win in that season's rain-shortened Daytona 500.
Following Reutimann, Newman and Gordon in the top five were Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards and Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, the leader when he opted to take four tires on the final stop, finished sixth after leading five times for a race-high 152 laps.
Richard Petty Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya, JGR’s Joey Logano and Roush Fenway’s Matt Kenseth completed the top 10.
Busch was the leader, with a fast-closing Kahne in second, before the final caution and subsequent stops, which ultimately handed Reutimann the victory.
“This team deserves a win and we’ve worked real hard all year,” Childers said. “We’ll take them any way we can get them.”
Newman was also thankful for the rain.
Starting from the pole, the Stewart-Haas Racing driver led the opening two laps and ran among the top five early before falling behind when a loose lug nut forced him to make an extra pit stop under the race’s third caution. Newman gave up third to come in a second time and restarted 42nd before rallying. Ultimately, though, it was the call not to pit late that gave the Indiana native his strong finish.
“We had more to gain than we had to lose by staying out,” Newman said.
Others who encountered problems weren’t able to rebound quite as well.
Hendrick Motorsports’ Mark Martin ran as high as second before his crew let a tire role outside its pit box under the fourth caution, forcing Martin to serve a pass-through penalty and restart deep in the field. Martin finished 17th.
Pit-road issues also hampered the effort of Vickers, who twice passed Busch for the lead and paced the field for 33 laps.
Vickers was the leader before a lug-nut issue led to a slow stop during the race’s fifth caution and sent the Red Bull Racing driver back to 10th for the restart. After that restart, Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch, who hovered around the top 10 for the first half of the race, fell out of contention with an unscheduled pit stop on lap 193 for a vibration. He finished 34th.
It was also a long afternoon for Hendrick Motorsports’ Dale Earnhardt Jr. Starting 27th, NASCAR’s most popular driver never moved much higher as he battled an ill-handling Chevrolet that didn’t respond to numerous adjustments on pit road.
Earnhardt Jr. eventually fell two laps down and finished 40th.
The only accident of the day occurred when Richard Childress Racing’s Kevin Harvick suffered a cut right-front tire and hit the wall on lap 17. Harvick, whose car sustained right-side damage in the accident, was never a factor the rest of the way. He finished 41st.
The race was interrupted five times because of rain, with the first red flag coming on lap 73 and halting proceedings for 56 minutes and 36 seconds. A second red flag flew on lap 177 that stopped the action for 20 minutes and 33 seconds.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, the race was rescheduled to noon EDT Monday after rain forced the postponement.

It's great to see our little city on the map, for something good.
As for the race sucking, I didn't think so. It was pretty good, especially since we saw some actual racing, unlike some other 1.5 mile tracks. Tough luck for Kasey though, he was a lap from passing Kyle and they threw the caution.

May 25, 2009 at 5:56 PMTo be quite honest with you Galvan18244, just about every race this year sucked, but congrats to Dave. To shed some sunshine though, ESPN Classics showed the 1989 Budweiser 500 from Dover today. That was some great racing, stock cars going door to door racing, could you imagine? door to door? not follow the leader. Enjoy the rest of the season everyone, it's going to get better, I think.

May 25, 2009 at 5:57 PMI liked it all the way up to the last rain delay. I was hoping that KB, Vickers, Johnson and Edwards would have a good fight to the finish. Congrats to Kyle on a good run day. Fans dont like to see races won on luck decisions, but its all part of racing. There were some drivers coming back there at the end before the delay. This race had the potential for a great finish with the drivers that were up front. But congrats to Reudimann and his team on their win.

May 25, 2009 at 6:39 PMBy racing hard, and by his crew chief making the call to stay out, he won his first Cup race. On the other hand, if he had conformed to Tony Crybaby Stewart's instructions, he would have stopped racing hard and wouldn't have been in position to be the first car to stay out...thus not winning. But Reuti knows how to drive, his crew chief made a good gamble, and THEY'RE in Victory Lane! Congrats!!!

She showed her ability to outlast and make millions of people waste an entire day sitting around waiting for an actual race to take place. Its a shame the cars that actually had a chance to win couldn't afford to gamble on staying out before the last caution.

May 25, 2009 at 7:50 PMWhat a waste of time. I'm glad I DVRed the race and fast-forwarded through the majority of it. Races are supposed to determine who the best driver of the day is... that's who should win the race.
Report as AbuseWhy doesn't NASCAR implement a rule (since they are so good with the dozens of other rules) and say that - in the case of a rain caution - drivers cannot pit until AFTER the field is ready to go back racing. Or, if the race ended "under caution" because of rain, use the scoring from the last green flag lap. That way you wouldn't have people winning that don't deserve it.
Strategy or not, luck or not, we all know David didn't deserve to win the race based on his performance during the other 226 laps.

May 25, 2009 at 8:15 PMI agree with placer86. Using the scoring from the last green flag lap if the caution came out because of rain is a great idea. Or even just use the order that the field was frozen in when the caution came out. I'm sorry I didn't think of it first. Even though it would give the win to the detestable Kyle Busch. There is definitely something wrong when Robby Gordon finishes in 3rd place.

May 25, 2009 at 8:39 PMI'm not a Reutimann/Waltrip/Toyota fan, but I respect them and congratulate them for a job well done. No one can say that they "stole" the race or didn't win it fair and square. Reutimann may not have led a green flag lap, but they made the smart call and didn't pit when it was obvious that the rain was coming. After all, the winner is the one out front at the end of the race. (I remember a 1997 Pocono race where Dave Marcis pitted while leading under caution, only to see the race red-flagged on the next lap.)
Report as AbuseTony Stewart had very right to admonish David Reutimann for his (perceived) unsportsmanlike behavior, but he had no business doing it in public, much less in the presence of Reutimann's crew. Tony is just not familiar with some of the social graces.

May 26, 2009 at 12:20 AMDon't understand why so many people are hating on Reutimann. He's a good driver, and he's certainly established himself as the best MWR has. We all know MWR isn't the best team in NASCAR, so we should be applauding him. Not knocking Reut saying that will be his only win. Yeah, he's a bit older to be rising through the ranks right now, but if you flash back to the second half of last year in the #44, he was doing pretty good and he's been in or right around the top twelve all year. Quit hating on Reutimann.

May 26, 2009 at 6:30 AMI have to admitt I was dissapointed in the race. I was ready to see more racing especially after hearing Kasey Kahne say he was ready to race some more. Wish the race would have gone on for 60 more laps at least. Make it a Kyle vs Kasey shootout. Before the caution came out Kasey was moving in on Kyle Busch, and I am sorry Kyle, but I am a big Kasey Kahne fan. As for 00 and 7 you guys did not deserve those finishes, I wish the rain would have stopped, now don't get me wrong it was an ok move to stay out like that but man, I really wanted to see some racing yesterday, now I wish Kasey would have stayed out. Dang it!

But my next won 70% of the features at the Florida 1/2 mile Fairgrounds. My point (all good deserving Family, Uncles and cousin Racers also)

May 26, 2009 at 9:19 AMKNCHEVY, you are right, Kasey was moving in closer and would have possibly been there at the end. Im a Kyle B fan, and have to admit Kasey had a hotrod. Still have to congrat Dave Reut for the gutsy decision he made. Had it gone back green, he and Ryan would have lost a lot of ground. They all read the same rule book and knew what the risks were either way. Good call! Kyle finished 6th, not bad.

Hopefully it's a sign of a turn around for the #9 team & Kahne will have his time to shine soon. Reutimann won by not pitting as many have done before him but the standing by the car for 2 1/2 hours in the rain was more than I could take.

May 26, 2009 at 8:45 PMHaving a rain shortened 600 was a terrible end to what should have been a good experience for race fans. After sitting through all the sogginess the race should have been postponed and the fans given their money back. They (NASCAR) apparently have that option and that would have been the right thing to do. Just this and fuel mileage wins are the things that gives NASCAR a black eye. If that had been an Indy car race they would have continued with rain tires. What makes it any different to GIVE the race to the one that makes the lucky move or getting to watch all teams try their best with rain tires? All things considered, I realize that if it would have been my driver that won that way I would have liked the win, but only with reservation.

May 28, 2009 at 11:32 AMWhat a sorry way to determine the winner of a race. Why not on a rain caution bring all the cars in. Wait on the rain and if it doesn't stop the car that led the last green flag lap is the winner. If the rain stops take two caution laps then let the cars come in and let the pit crews get the cars out in order....

Jun 2, 2009 at 11:04 PMGo Reutimann, We've been pulling for you since you came to cup series:) What is so sad is that Nascar Scene gave your magazine cover to Danica Patrick. You know, the IRL driver who isn't in NASCAR who teases men for her sponsor by acting like she's unzipping her jacket? How classy.(not). So, hope for many wins in the future and you can get your magazine cover too. Maybe they want you to unzip your jacket as well?
