General Discussion » Toyota recall includes 3.8 million cars sold in the USA
November 2, 2009 General Motors is recalling all models because of a problem with plastic supply and return ports on the modular reservoir assembly. The ...
Yates Racing co-owner Doug Yates says that David Gilliland remains under contract with the organization this season, though he does not have a NASCAR Sprint Cup entry for Gilliland to drive.
Gilliland, 32, drove full time for the team last season, finishing 27th in driver points and 28th in owners points. Those have been moved to the No. 96 team with Bobby Labonte, through an alliance with Hall of Fame Racing. The addition of Paul Menard and the third car have left Gilliland out of the driver lineup heading into the 2009 season. Travis Kvapil, who finished 23rd in the driver standings in 2009, is still driving the No. 28 but is not guaranteed a full schedule this season as the organization continues to seek sponsorship. His points have been moved to the No. 98 of Paul Menard.
“David is still under contract with Yates Racing,” Yates said. “We’re looking for opportunities for David, but just with the way things came together at the end of the year with the Bobby Labonte program [at Hall of Fame Racing] and keeping Travis in the [No.] 28 car, David doesn’t have a ride right now.
“David Gilliland is a great race-car driver. He did an excellent job for Yates Racing last year, and he had our best finish as a team when he was second at Infineon [Raceway]. Hopefully, there’s something out there that we can put together for him or puts him back in the position he wants to be.”

Jan 27, 2009 at 4:49 PMSo him and Kvapil work their tails off last year with hardly any sponsorship and keep the cars in the top 35 and they give the guaranteed rides for Daytona 500 to Menard and Labonte? how is that fair? Under contract yet no car. that makes no sense. at least give him a full time ride in the NNS....at the very least

Jan 27, 2009 at 5:26 PMMenard brought his sponsor with him and Bobby is racing for Hall of Fame in alliance with Yates. And they were able to get a sponsorship for Bobby. I hope that they are able to get a sponsor for Gilliland, it would be a shame if he couldn't get on the track. Both him and Travis did a pretty good job of keeping in the top 35 with only spotty sponsorship.

Jan 27, 2009 at 6:52 PMGilliland never really belonged in Cup anyhow. I mean the only reason this guy was in Cup is because of one lucky fuel milage win in Kentucky in 2006. I mean other then that, this guy hasnt done too much but get in the way of drivers who honestly stand a chance to make the chase. Example.....his mess he caused in Texas. He might be a great guy behind the scenes, but he would be better served off of the Cup circuit.

Jan 27, 2009 at 8:13 PMHope that they can put something together for David as I think Yates, with Larry Carter coming on board will be the strongest they have been since Doug and Max took over.
Report as AbuseNote to Ryan: The win in Kentucky was legit, fuel mileage not a factor. If your going to post in a forum read by knowledgeable fans, get your facts straight so as not to embarrass yourself.

Report as Abusefor someone who is an arm chair racer you should at least look at the facts. David ended up 27 in point ahead of
Dave Blaney,Reed Sorenson,Robby gordon,Regan Smith,Sam Hornish,A J Allmendinger,Joe Nemechek,J J Yaley,Aric Almirola,Ken Shrader,Kyle Petty, and Jeremy Mayfield. many of whom had fully funded teams and are "heavy hitters" luck-i do not agree, a lack of funding kept him from showing his potential. and texas--well if mr. wonderful Juan Pollo Montoya (yes is spelled it right-chicken)had not been such a jerk for most the races he was in David would not have to let him know to lay off. BTY the drivers in the pits agreed with david--enough was enough. even montoya knew why he was parked

Jan 28, 2009 at 10:49 AMWhatever your opinion of David's racing abilities, it is thanks to his efforts that Yates has a guaranteed starting spot for that car this year. To keep him under contract, but not let him race, is a sad commentary of just how underhanded the team owners in NASCAR have become. Yates apparently considers him to be a competative threat, or else why not allow him to drive for someone else.

Jan 28, 2009 at 11:27 AMThis whole little news blurb is odd, isn't it? Seeing as it is the same thing they have been saying since the media tour. This looks like the "Wash, rinse, repeat" theory of writing.
Report as AbuseIf they really trusted in David, they would have had him at the media tour. They would also have fielded a car for him to try and get into the show at Daytona. And the concept of them trying to find a ride for him even in one of the lower series was a joke, as there were no rides there either.
Will we see him at the track with the team? I doubt it, I am sure there will be no room for him on the plane. And will we see one of David's sponsors from last year sitting on one of the other cars in the Yates stable?
I am pretty disgusted with Doug and Max right now. David is being far more gracious and charitable than I.

Jan 30, 2009 at 9:24 AMI've been a Gilliland fan since day one. He did get shafted here. Menard got in because his daddy has money and Labonte...well he's Bobby Labonte. In my opinion the only reason Kvapil finished ahead of Gilliland in pionts last year was because of pit crews. I can't count the amount of times Gilliland pitted and drop a minimum of 5 spots usually more. And if he didn't drop it was because they only took 2 tires. Kvapil is an alright driver but between the two I'd take Gilliland.
