Dave Rogers to become Kyle Busch's new Cup crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing

Joe Gibbs Racing officials announced Tuesday that Dave Rogers will replace Steve Addington as Kyle Busch’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief after this weekend’s race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Rogers returns to Sprint Cup after four seasons in the Nationwide Series. He guided JGR’s No. 20 team to the Nationwide owners championship last year, winning nine races. The No. 20 has won five races this year.

Addington has led Busch’s No. 18 Cup team for two years, winning 12 races over that span. But Busch missed the Chase For The Sprint Cup this season. Addington will be reassigned to another position at JGR after Talladega.

“We evaluate all of our teams on an ongoing basis and believe this is a change that will make the 18 team stronger as we prepare for next season,” JGR President J.D. Gibbs said in a news release. “We think highly of Steve and the job he has done, and we look forward to him remaining a part of the JGR family.

“Dave has proven himself a talented crew chief, and we think he will work well with Kyle. We hope that by making the move following this weekend’s race at Talladega they can use the final three weeks of this season to begin working on communication and setups for the 2010 season.”

Rogers first joined Gibbs in 1998, working with the organization’s No. 20 Cup team and driver Tony Stewart through 2004. He moved to Cup as Jason Leffler’s crew chief in 2005.

    I guess pit stops under 14 seconds isn't good enough for JGR. No word were Addington really ends up going. We will see how Rogers does with COT. If Adddinton's contract is up this year there will be plenty of takers.

    I think Mr. Addington paired up with Dale Jr could just be the combo Hendrick needs to get the 88 back on track. Lance is a great crew chief but I think an overhaul is required here. Jr. definitely needs to perform/step up however you want to say it and Steve may just be the guy that can right that ship.

    #1 - I guess not making the Chase isn't good enough. Since JGR owns the teams, I figure what ever they decide is good enough. I wish Steve all the best and hope that he is the CC for the races in 2010 with Gilliland in the 4th JGR car (which could turn into a full time 4th car in 2011). Steve is a good CC but if the owners think a change needs to be made, that is their call no matter what some poster who hates their driver thinks.

    Addington should leave JGR. He did not deserve this. Maybe its the best for him anyway, the way those Busch boys talk to their crews is despicable. The rear tire changer even threw the gun at the blue deuce in frustration last week as big brother continued to disrepect the guys that take car of his car.

    #4 You are right Joe Gibbs owns the team and it is his to do what he wants. I still think he is one of the best crew chiefs out there. Missing the chase wasn't Addingtons fault. The wreck in Daytona was the beginning of the end for Kyle Busch.

    The only reason Addington couldn't do it, was because Kyle was always with the Nationwide team. If he wants to do better in Cup, he shouldn't be racing everywhere. Addington has said in the past that he can't get enough time with Kyle. Looks like Kyle can only beat the little guys. That's not talent in my book. And it's not the crew chief's fault.

    I was thinking the exact same thing #3 when I read the rumor about Bush possibly getting a new crew chief. I think they would click together, Steve's been around this sport a long time and is a proven winner. Mr Hendrick start making some phone calls please. We all know this was Bush's decision, not Joe's or JD's. The same big mouth/hypocrit who criticised Jr yet turns around and does the same thing!! Whats wrong with Jason Radcliff, hmmm???? I tell you what Bush knows that he got beat by Joey and the 20 group a few times so he thinks it was Dave Rogers that made it happen, sorry to say but that was all Joey. I will laugh my head off if he does worse next year, look out folks we ain't seen nothing yet...

    If this had been the Military Addington would have qualified for Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Busch needs to grow up and except some of the responsibility for a poor season. How Gibbs (old man or dummy son)can blame Addington is beyond understanding. Neither of the Busch's have every been told no, so when they are it's like two 5 year old kids.

    It's never fire the quarterback it's fire the coach. Countless times Addington and his pit crew moved Busch up 3-4 postions off of pit row, for that he gets fired. Great to know the driver now decides who his pit chief is and not the person who owns the business. How dumb is that? Since when has Dave been in charge of a COT car? Never.

    Dave would have been up in the CUP level this year had it not been for Magnetgate.. He is most deserving of the chance. I thought TS would bring him up for this year. I see good things for the 18 next season. Kyle _should_ have learned his lesson on the value of points and stop running into walls when the car isn't great.

    The Busch brothers are both spoiled brats. The problem started with the parents not teaching them proper manners or behavior. They have no class and as far as I am concerned, they would not be missed if the left NASCAR. 98% of the drivers are good, moral people. Busch and Busch are the other 2%.

    Another way to look at it is maybe it was like serving time in prison and with all the wins, Addington is getting off early for time served and good behavior. The temptation to level Kyle has got to be near uncontrollable at times, I know I couldn't do it and Steve should be able to find a better gig.

    I guess that what Addington has done isn't good enough after all. But he's supposedly out of his contract after 2010, so if he gets any offers for 2011 I won't be surprised to see him leave.

    It was a fluke last year. What makes anyone think Kyle should be doing any better? He can use his tactics with Nationwide drivers, but Cup is over his head. One great year does not make a great driver. He shouldn't have smashed that guitar. Kyle doesn't have the time this year to work with Addington. Will he give the next one the time? Only if he doesn't spend all his time trying to be the great driver he actually isn't. One year was all he could muster.

    Sheila, your assumption that Kyle is in over his head in Cup is asinine. While I do believe that running Nationwide full time has taken away some Cup success, the duo was obviously not clicking last year. I think Ratcliff would have been a better fit than Rogers, but no complains. And if you look, this year Kyle missed the Chase by a measly 8 points because he was inconsistent, not because he's in over his head. Give me a break.

    I know Steve Addington personally and you guys are right he does not deserve to be treated like some step child. Steve is a good thoughtful person. He doesn't make snap decisions. He has been around racing longer than baby Kyle has been alive. About time J. D. Gibbs gets his priority straight and kick some butt. Who needs a spoiled brat dragging down the name of Joe Gibbs. In fact my recommendation to Steve will be to get out of the Gibbs organization as fast as he can and go somewhere where he is appreciated. I have heard too many of these idiot car owners use the rhetoric "we appreciate the job so and so has done". That is the death signal we don't have a place for you in our organization. Until Kyle Busch grows up and becomes a man he doesn't deserve to be in the NASCAR chase. I have said it before and will say it again, he is a liability to sponsors and the racing community as a whole.

Wow, amazing that he has that much power at JGR. I would have never guessed it. At most teams, the owner tells you who your CC is, not the other way around.     Kyle wins.Addington loses.Simple as that.Kyle Boy needs to be told he concentrates on Cup Series OR Nationwide.I think Francecar should allow Cup drivers to compete in only TWO NW Races each year and no more than THREE in any given raceThere are several drivers who for whatever the reason usually finish at the back of the field in either NW,Cup or both.Those ones should be sent home where they belong.

    #34, no I'm not kidding. It's funny how no one hounds Jeff Burton or Kevin Harvick for not being race winning contenders (until as of late for Harvick). These two made the chase last year, so did Jr. Everyone is just eating this up that Jr. is struggling so badly. I'm not oblivious to the fact that SOME responsibility falls squarely on Jr's shoulders. But I guess so many of you have gone through what he has gone through in his life. About 95% of you on here have no idea what it would be like to walk in that guy's shoes for just 1 day. Heck after 1 hour, most of you would be looking for a psych it would turn your world upside down so bad. I also find it amusing that a lot of people pass judgment (mostly negative) towards a person they don't even know except seeing him on tv. But everyone seems to know how things should be.     Just a thought so let me know if I am off course here. Since the arrival of the COT the crew chiefs and drivers always talk about what a handful of problems and unknowns there are about it. Now given the fact that Kyle can drive darn near anything to a win, aren't the better placed drivers in the Chase either full time Cup or maybe 1 or 2 time drivers in the Nationwide in a season? Several of the comments in here have stated time spent away from Cup focus and running full to almost full time in the Nationwide may be the cause for the fall off for Kyle. But I tend to see that in other drivers as well who participate heavily in the Nationwide Series. Apparently the crew chiefs and drivers of the lagging teams may need to 'study' this car together full time. Think Logano, Edwards, Bowyer and Vickers who run a heavy Nationwide schedule. Then think about Johnson, Gordon, Martin, Stewart and Montoya that do not run the Nationwide much or at all.

With that said I agree Joe Gibbs made the decision not Kyle Busch. It's ludicrous to think the driver made the decision.

    Most of you are doing yourself proud today. It's a joke to read most of your post. Do you guys really believe that Kyle runs JGR? Get real! The Gibbs make the decisions. Just goes to show that you can win 12 times in two years with any combination of CC and driver and some owners are still left unsatisfied without being in the Chase. And as sadly as it is, the CC is easier to change than the driver what with Sponsors and their big dollar imput. So lets see what happens next year. Kyle does better, Kyle does worse? Doesn't matter there will always be an unending supply of CC waiting for the next failure of Kyle or Jr. or any other driver.

    JWILL8, Come on. What has he gone through lately? He is with the NASCAR Company team. He should be winning races. Put Kyle back in that car and it will have wins. Its not the car or the crew chief. Its the driver! Same with the 18 team. Kyle should concentrated on cup racing this year and he would be in the chase. Same with Edwards.     I hardly see how 12 wins in les than 2 seasons is a failure. Joe Gibbs had no logistical reason to make a change unless Cry Baby went behind Addingtons back to Joe. Tony had bad seasons and missed the chase that year, did Joe get rid of Zippy?? NOPE!! There are subtle things that show Kyle wanted a change, not Gibbs. I'll refresh one of my earlier points, if it was Gibbs making the call, then why not pair Bush with someone he's familair with already and has wins with (Jason Radcliff)????

    #38, you better stick to your Jeff Gordon forums. Joe and JD will do anything Kyle wants. He is the most talented driver out there according to countless drivers, both retired and current including Jeff and Jimmie. Steve wasn't getting the job done preparing the cars and that's the bottom line. The crew chief has nothing to do with pit stops Mr Know it All. They have a trainer at the shop that makes them that good on Sunday. You dont have a clue about a Cup team and what happens during the week.

    PRRFAN, lets see where should I start...long story short...Everyone wants Jr. to be his father. Not going to happen. Jr. never once asked to be the most popular driver, he never asked to dominate nascar. He just wanted to be that guy from Kannapolis, NC that can hang with his buddies and be a successful race car driver. He would rather fly under the radar than be hounded by the media and fans. The way I see it, he has done a heck of a job. Nobody on this forum can come close to handling any small amount of pressure that he endures on a daily basis. I doubt Kryle has a chance to go back to Hendrick, he burnt that bridge on that fateful day in Texas when he left his team high and dry after he ran over, oh who was that, Dale Jr. Your turn...

The pressure might be because he knows he can't do what expected of a top NASCAR driver. He has turned the 88 car into a start and park car. Its a shame what happen to his father.     To have a winning season the driver and crew chief needs to have good chemistry and if Kyle has that with Dave then that was the right decision for Joe and JD to make. I think Dave Rogers will be a great crew chief at the Sprint Cup level. The only sad thing, I was hoping Tony would grab on to him for his third driver. I wish the best for Steve and hope he continues to do what he does best and that is being a crew chief. Maybe he is what Jr needs in a crew chief.

    PRFAN, you really have no idea of NASCAR before this year do you. I am a Tony fan, but anyone who knows anything about racing can't just sit there and say Mike Bliss would be better. Jr will never be Jimmie, Tony, Jeff or his father, but you dont "luck" your way in to 18 wins, just doesnt happen. You might also want to look at the laps lead, average running position, tops 10's from last season and maybe you can be a little more informed before you speak. Jr is not great by any means, but the guys is not bad at all. Ignorance is bliss for some though I guess.

    Kyle has no problem winning in Nationwide and Truck, just Cup, and he still wins some there, and sometimes when he didn't win, it was his own fault with aggressive decisions that didn't work out, but not always, sometimes the car just didn't work. I just think the magic is gone between Kyle and Steve, so Gibbs is trying something else. I don't dislike Jr., actually I feel sorry for him for bearing the burden of rabid, over the top fans who obsess on his father. Maybe Jr. should befriend John Lennon's sons, maybe they could teach him how to shrug off the pressure. Both have done a good job.
