Coke Zero 400 TV ratings off 18.4 percent
By SceneDaily Staff
Wednesday, July 08, 2009
TNT says its coverage of Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Daytona International Speedway earned a 3.1 household rating from Nielsen Media Research.
The rating was 18.4 percent lower than the 3.8 TNT earned for the race in 2008, and a spokesperson noted this year’s race fell on the July 4th holiday, which is traditionally a weak time for television ratings.

Jul 8, 2009 at 3:22 PMOh who cares. NOT every race fan out there is part of the Neilson Media Research. I'm not hooked up to a Neilson box or anybody that I know. This is not a true reading of the ratings. Its only contained to a certain amount of people, not everybody with a tv. So these ratings aren't accuate and are probably WAY off what they should be because again, its only for a certain amount of people and NOT everyone with a tv.
Report as AbuseSo stop reporting that the ratings are down when it does NOT involve everyone with a tv because its incorrect.

Jul 8, 2009 at 3:25 PMNot everyone race fan out there is part of the Neilson Media Research, and not everybody with a tv has one of these boxes or fill out little books what they watch. So therefore these readings of the percentage of the rating have drop are therefore adequate. Unless this involes every one with a tv, then you can report, until this....stop reporting it because its probably no where near the actual drop in the ratings. I do not know anybody who is part of the Neilson Media Research and we all watch the races every weekend.

Jul 8, 2009 at 8:11 PMI don't doubt it one bit. The wide open coverage was more commercials than race coverage. Takeing away the sound and running the commercials was a complete joke. If those 18% were watching, you can bet that after the first 20 minutes they were shutting off and listening to the radio coverage on MRN it's better than Ralph and Wally. Kyle simply was and is a great broadcaster. Wally hasn't ever had an original thought in his head. His broadcast career is worse than his raceing career, short and without any meaningful achievements. I can't say I enjoyed the race but without the funds to see Daytona (too far away) it was all I could find on TV Saturday Nite. Nascar is at fault. Put in all on Speed TV with Larry, Darrel and Mike Joy., they are the best!!! Seems like I write almost all negative but that's for 1 in a million..and I (we) Count!!!

Jul 8, 2009 at 8:33 PMThe casual fan doesn't even have a clue about the races being on TNT. It's the casual fan that has fallen by the wayside not the hardcore guys like us. The July 4th does make it a little bit harder for some to watch. I coudln't watch the whole race but I did have it on so I could catch up with it occasionally.
Report as AbuseNascar makes it real hard to keep up with the schedule when it changes EVERY FREAKIN WEEK!!!

Jul 8, 2009 at 9:06 PMWow, and these numbers surprise people? July 4 people are out partying, celebrating, all that. To be honest, an 18% drop should be considered pretty small, given that most races are off 10% or more, an 8% increase on that is definitely not bad for it having been a July 4 race.

Jul 9, 2009 at 4:26 PMNascar needs to stick to ABC, FOX or regular channels. Some people do not get TNT and ESPN on basic service. Not everyone can afford all those extra channels. They need to set the schedule and the network and leave it alone so we know were they are. Fox does a good job, leave it there. Sprint, Nationwide and Trucks should be on the same channell.

Jul 9, 2009 at 4:26 PMNASCAR can blame it on the race being on the 4th of July or what ever else they want. What about the other races not on the 4th of July where the tv ratings and attendance went down?
Report as AbuseThe fact of the matter is that race fans, who also may be NASCAR fans do not like what Brian France and NASCAR have done to the series. The fact that NASCAR no longer calls it a race, but a show, should speak volumes. Maybe NASCAR should come out of the closet like the WWE did years ago and admit that it is a show and sports entertainment and that it is not real, because that is what it has become, sports entertainment. In my opinion NASCAR has the same amount of creditability as the WWE, none.
The only reason the caution flag was thrown on lap 145 was because the front four cars was running away from the rest of the field and they wanted to bunch up the pack. It had nothing to due with debris. I was at that show,I mean race. There was debris on the front stretch right before the entrance to pit road and it stayed there the entire race. That was my last NASCAR race at the track and on tv, unless Brian France and NASCAR starts to listen to the fans and returns it to what it was. But, that would mean they would have to admit they was wrong about evrything, the COT, the chase, the lucky dog and the qualifing rules etc. and I do not think that is going to happen.

I do watch what i can on streaming media, when it is on, but thats certainly a small screen to watch for 3-4 hours. LOL.

Jul 9, 2009 at 8:04 PMNascar yes, now calls it a show and has its superstar actors, I have nothing against, Gordon,Johnson, Stewart, Lagaqno, ETC. But I am one that likes to see the underdog have a good day! Brian France fell way far from the tree, Get ride of the Carl Longs, Mayfield and some more as they can. Then we are, I guess supposed to watch the superstar multi millionair shows. This is getting Pathetic!

Jul 9, 2009 at 9:44 PMBravo # 10. Although you can't take back the lucky dog. We wanted double-file restarts, so there is no other way to get a lap back. You can't race the leader to the line when a caution comes out, or more crashing will occur. It's no longer racing. It's entertainment. That's why NASCAR loves Kyle Busch. He's entertaining. But is WWE really what race fans want? I sure don't.

Jul 9, 2009 at 9:52 PMI like Wally. Kyle tends to get too excited. And I'm really glad they got rid of Webber. I also think that starting times make a difference. By the way, #6 ratings are based on last year's viewers. On TNT with the wide open coverage. Only last year it was on the third and not the fourth of July.
