TALLADEGA, Ala. - Richard Childress Racing's Clint Bowyer paced Friday's second NASCAR Sprint Cup practice at Talladega Superspeedway in preparation for Sunday's Amp Energy 500.
Bowyer ran a lap of 193.154 mph to beat out Michael Waltrip Racing's Michael Waltrip (192.116) and Hendrick Motorsports' Jimmie Johnson (191.214).
Waltrip was black-flagged during practice, however, for not leaving enough space between cars in the corner. He was warned twice, and on the third time, NASCAR black-flagged him - meaning in this case that he had to return to the garage.
Richard Petty Motorsports' Reed Sorenson and Penske Racing's Kurt Busch completed the top five. Positions six through 10 belonged to Hendrick's Jeff Gordon, Roush Fenway Racing's David Ragan, Roush Fenway's Matt Kenseth, RPM's AJ Allmendinger and Roush Fenway's Greg Biffle.
Chase For The Sprint Cup drivers outside the top 10 were Stewart-Haas Racing's Tony Stewart (12th), RPM's Kasey Kahne (13th), Roush Fenway's Carl Edwards (14th), Hendrick's Mark Martin (16th), Stewart-Haas' Ryan Newman (18th), Red Bull Racing's Brian Vickers (28th) and Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin (29th).
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing’s Juan Pablo Montoya didn’t turn any laps in the session.
On-track activities for the Sprint Cup Series resume with qualifying at 12:15 p.m. EDT Saturday.
