Chart of the week: Bill Davis Racing
Triad Racing Technologies announced Monday it has purchased a majority interest in Bill Davis Racing, an organization that has had its share of ups and downs in the past 20 years.
Davis’ first foray as an owner in NASCAR’s top three series was in 1988 in the Nationwide Series. Mark Martin drove the No. 06 Ford to one win and six top 10s in 13 races. All told, Davis won 11 races in 13 seasons, including three by a second-year driver named Jeff Gordon in 1992.
Davis also won 24 times in 360 truck races over five seasons, which included a championship with Johnny Benson Jr. in 2008 and second-place finishes by Benson (2006) and Mike Skinner (2007).
But as the chart shows, in NASCAR’s premier series, Davis struggled. In 16 Cup seasons, he won five times, all by Ward Burton. The highlights were Burton’s Southern 500 victory at Darlington in 2001 and his win in the 2002 Daytona 500. BDR hasn’t had a winner in the past 231 Cup races, the third-longest active drought (behind Petty Enterprises, 348; and Wood Brothers, 272).
