Richard Childress Racing has found a sponsor to replace AT&T, with team officials announcing Wednesday that Caterpillar will be the primary sponsor of the No. 31 Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton starting with the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

The deal is a "multiyear partnership," a news release said.

Cat replaces AT&T, which agreed to leave the sport as part of a settlement with NASCAR over a conflict with cellular competitor Sprint, the sponsor of the Sprint Cup Series.

"To represent a well-known global brand like Caterpillar is an honor," RCR owner Richard Childress said. "Cat products have played a big part over the decades in construction projects at RCR, Childress Vineyards and Yadkin River Angus. Jeff and I look forward to meeting the Cat dealers and customers who loyally follow NASCAR racing."

Burton is a 20-time winner in NASCAR's premier series and is currently second in the Cup standings. He's won once this year and has four top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. The No. 31 team has made the Chase the past two seasons.

The Cat sponsorship moves from the No. 22 Bill Davis Racing team and driver Dave Blaney. Cat had been with BDR for 10 seasons.

"Success in the highly competitive environment of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series requires substantially greater levels of technology and investment than even a few years ago," said Jim Parker, vice president of Caterpillar's North American Commercial Division. "Joining Richard Childress and his team matches two organizations that share common values, as well as high levels of success. I'm confident this new partnership will excite Caterpillar's customers, dealers and employees."
