FORT WORTH, Texas – Although a switch for the NASCAR Sprint Cup finale at Homestead-Miami was discussed, Casey Mears will remain in the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet while Mark Martin will sit on the sideline.
Martin is replacing Mears next season, while Mears will drive for Richard Childress Racing.
There were discussions about Mears driving for RCR with Martin going into the Hendrick car for the finale so they could get a head start on next season, Mears and Martin said last Sunday.
But Hendrick Motorsports has opted to just keep Mears in the car, Hendrick spokesman Jesse Essex said Friday at Texas Motor Speedway.
Martin has two races left in the Dale Earnhardt Inc. ride he shares with Aric Almirola. Martin will drive this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway and next week at Phoenix International Raceway.
"The details of working it out so that the seat was vacant didn't quite lineup on that side of it," Martin said.
