Carter/Simo Racing owner John Carter confirms purchase of Jeremy Mayfield team assets
INDIANAPOLIS – Carter/Simo Racing is using an old Jeremy Mayfield hauler and even the old Mayfield Motorsports radio frequency after team owner John Carter bought the organization's NASCAR Sprint Cup equipment from Mayfield.
Carter said Sunday that he bought six cars and that his team also will work out of the old Mayfield shop. Crew chief Tony Furr, who was Mayfield’s crew chief, has worked for Carter in the past, and he brought many former Mayfield crew members with him to Carter/Simo Racing.
The team will not get Mayfield’s owner points nor credit for the Mayfield team’s attempts this year. Mayfield was suspended May 9 for what NASCAR says was a failed drug test for methamphetamines – a result that Mayfield says is not accurate.
Carter plans to run a minimum of six to eight races this year with Terry Labonte and Boris Said. He is seeking sponsorship for both of those drivers and would like to use only those drivers. Frank Stoddard will serve as crew chief for the races for Said.
“We’ll do as many races as we can if we get some money,” Carter said. “We’ve got good equipment now. We’ve got a good team. … It’s all really good equipment.”
He said he plans to run a complete race every event he enters. Labonte has the ability to use five past champion’s provisionals.
“I don’t start and park,” Carter said. “I go out there to race.”
Carter/Simo Racing’s other two cars were Dodges and those will be converted into Toyotas to match the former Mayfield cars.
