DARLINGTON, S.C. – Jeff Burton continues to be the most consistent performer in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this season.
The Richard Childress Racing driver finished 10th Saturday night at Darlington Raceway to keep alive a stretch that has him with a worst finish of 13th in the series' opening 11 races. Burton trails Kyle Busch by 79 points in the standings following Busch’s win in the Dodge Challenger 500.
Burton gained ground late in the race to rally for his seventh top-10 finish of the year.
“Toward the last third of the race, I drove way more aggressively and my car got a lot better too,” he said. “But we didn’t hit anything all night and that was a good thing. We were tight then loose then back to tight. We were our best there at the end but I'm proud of the team for fighting and because of that we were able to get another top 10."
Burton says that Busch and his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team are “in a league of their own” at this point, something that doesn’t surprise him after watching the group in preseason testing.
Still, he doesn’t see them as being out of reach. Not with teams like his being so consistent.
“We’ve just got to keep working and I think we can get there, I really do,” he said. “We’re not there now. But I think we can get there.”
