CONCORD, N.C. - Greg Biffle overcame a penalty and a five-driver field that seemed confused but enthusiastic during the inaugural Pennzoil Victory Challenge on Saturday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
All but one of the drivers involved in the segment received a penalty for a variety of rules infractions in the session that involved a series of doughnuts and spinning tires en route to a finish box.
All five of the drivers involved – Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch and Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson also participated – added their own unique spin to the event and seemed to hold a fair amount of disregard for the structure of it. Instead, they treated fans to a spectacle that involved more burnout and less time constraint than originally proposed.
After their runs, all the drivers laughed about the session, which kicked off an evening of all-star activities at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
“It was pretty fun,” Biffle said, saying that he enjoyed the fan reaction. “It was awesome and I gave them a little slide job over here around the Legends track, so the fans loved it. They want to see the smoke and the excitement and I think they saw that.”
As to his own effort, Biffle said he’d award it a D- on takeoff (he was penalized for being slow to get his tires spinning), but then said he’d give the overall effort a B-plus.
The winning $10,000 prize will benefit the Greg Biffle Foundation, an organization that serves as an advocate for the well being of animals. Biffle said that the funds could be used to help build a new animal shelter.
Drivers did suggest that perhaps they could use different cars for this next season. This year, the group competed in Richard Petty Driving Experience cars.
“I want to bring one of my cars because I think the fans would get really juiced up about us bringing our stuff out here and doing it,” Biffle said. “That would be pretty cool for them to see that. I’m talking about one of my personal cars. If Goodyear would bring us some tires, I would bring my Shelby GT500 car.
“It’s got a lot of power and it would look cool out there laying down some tuber and some smoke.”
