Brian Vickers takes damaged car to seventh-place finish at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Brian Vickers caught a piece of the first big wreck in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Coke Zero 400, but it hardly ruined his night.

In fact, despite the rough outing, Vickers finished seventh at Daytona International Speedway, his best finish since placing fifth at the Coca-Cola 600 in May and only his second top-10 in the last six races.

And with the troubles of Chase For The Sprint Cup bubble drivers ahead of him, the Red Bull Racing driver vaulted himself back into the top 12 conversation. He’s now just 168 points behind 12th place.

Vickers said he had “nowhere to go to avoid” the big wreck, but praised his team for “fixing the car and getting me back on track without losing a lap.”

Seventh tied Vickers’ best career Daytona finish spanning 11 races. He also finished seventh in the 2006 Daytona 500.

“Luck was not on our side today, but we made the most of it,” he said. “I am really happy with the seventh-place finishing spot, especially considering the damage to the car.”
