JOLIET, Ill. – Clint Bowyer says he's relieved that team owner Richard Childress is publicly denying reports that Bowyer's primary sponsor, Jack Daniel’s, is leaving his team at the end of the season.
Speculation that UPS might replace Jack Daniel’s on Bowyer’s No. 07 Richard Childress Racing entry in 2009 was put to rest, at least for now, by Childress, who said the current sponsor would return for at least another year.
Did his car owner’s denial of talks about Jack Daniel’s moving on ease Bowyer’s mind?
“Absolutely,” said Bowyer, who also recently indicated that he has reached an agreement to stay at RCR through the 2011 season. “I am happy to be where I am at. I love my sponsor, I love my team, and I love being a part of RCR so I am glad to get all the stressful times behind and not have to worry about it for quite some time.”
With his sponsor in place for next season, Bowyer is focused on recording a strong finish in Saturday night’s LifeLock.com 400 Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway, a 1.5-mile facility with a configuration similar to several tracks where he and his team have struggled this season.
“I am really looking forward to it,” Bowyer said. “We typically haven’t been running good on these type of race tracks, so I am looking forward to the challenge. This has always been a special track for me. I know if I run good here, I can go to the sister track in Kansas, which is my home track, and run well. It is important for me to run well here.”
Netting a good finish is more important for Bowyer than a lot of drivers. Sitting 10th in the series standings, Bowyer is a paltry 16 points ahead of 13th-place Kevin Harvick and 18 points behind eighth-place Kasey Kahne. The outcome of Saturday’s race could mean a lot for Bowyer’s chances of making what is now known as the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup for a second straight season.
“It is nerve-racking,” he said. “I mean it is crunch time, do-or-die time. Now it is all about making your way in to that Chase. Right now we are in it, but it is up to us to stay in it.”
