Bob Bahre, former owner of what is now New Hampshire Motor Speedway, received the 2008 Buddy Shuman Award at the NASCAR National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers Media Luncheon in New York City on Thursday.

Bahre, who sold the track to Speedway Motorsports Inc. in 2007, was given the award for his longtime support of stock car racing in the New England area.

The award, which has been presented since 1957, honors Buddy Shuman, a pioneering NASCAR driver who died in a hotel fire in November 1955.

“Bob was a pioneer in NASCAR’s growth in the Northeast,” NASCAR President Mike Helton said. “He’s one of the most respected men in the sport – ever.”

Bahre, 80, purchased the track in 1989 and reopened it – following reconstruction and renovations – in 1990.

NASCAR events have been held at the track since July 1990.
