Bob Bahre, former owner of what is now New Hampshire Motor Speedway, received the 2008 Buddy Shuman Award at the NASCAR National Motorsports Press Association Myers Brothers Media Luncheon in New York City on Thursday.

Bahre, who sold the track to Speedway Motorsports Inc. in 2007, was given the award for his longtime support of stock car racing in the New England area.

The award, which has been presented since 1957, honors Buddy Shuman, a pioneering NASCAR driver who died in a hotel fire in November 1955.

“Bob was a pioneer in NASCAR’s growth in the Northeast,” NASCAR President Mike Helton said. “He’s one of the most respected men in the sport – ever.”

Bahre, 80, purchased the track in 1989 and reopened it – following reconstruction and renovations – in 1990.

NASCAR events have been held at the track since July 1990.

    Congratulations to Bob !!

Mr. Bahre is a highly respected businessman from Maine. Nobody could run a track as well as this guy did. We hated seeing him sell the Oxford Plains Speedway and venture into New Hampshire. Apparently, the tax payers of Oxford-South Paris area decided they didn’t need the revenue that a speedway like NHIS would bring to Maine.

Congratulations,Mr. Bahre!!...But I sure wish you hadn't sold Loudon to SMI...I just hope they hold onto both your Cup race dates, and don't transfer one to one of their crappy tracks that doesn't sell out as it is, as opposed to Loudon that does sell out every race.

Congratulations to Bob Bahre - a well deserved honor! NHMS is always a sellout and will continue to be for years to come. Small, but noticeable, improvements were already made (removing those tall, ugly speaker-poles was a great one!) and Bruton will keep two races here if he knows what is good for his wallet!
