Bill Elliott will compete in his 61st Sprint Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway as he is one of 47 drivers on the entry list for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600.
Elliott is driving a part-time schedule for Wood Brothers Racing and is the only past champion among the 12 drivers not guaranteed spots in the field. That means he will be in the 43-car field by virtue of his past champion’s status if he fails to qualify for the race based on speed.
That leaves 11 drivers vying for the seven remaining spots.
Drivers not locked in are Phoenix Racing’s Mike Bliss, Germain Racing’s Max Papis, Latitude 43 Motorsports’ David Stremme, Braun Racing’s Reed Sorenson, Tommy Baldwin Racing (driver TBA), Front Row Motorsports’ David Gilliland, Whitney Motorsports’ J.J. Yeley, Gunselman Motorsports’ Todd Bodine, Prism Motorsports’ Michael McDowell and Dave Blaney, and Nemco Motorsports’ Joe Nemechek.
Gilliland, who for the last two weeks has been driving the No. 38 car for Front Row, will be driving the No. 37 this week as part of another switch for the organization. Rookie Kevin Conway, who has the Extenze sponsorship, has been moved from the No. 37 to the No. 34. And Travis Kvapil, who had previously driven the 34 and is 32nd in the owner standings, will move into the team’s No. 38 entry, which is 35th in the owner standings and just two points ahead of the No. 37.
