Award-winning motorsports photographer Donald A. Hunter of Charlotte passed away on Nov. 6 following a brief illness.
Hunter, 79, worked as a photographer for the Charlotte Observer for many years and was the director of photography for Charlotte Motor Speedway, according to an obituary in the Observer.
Considered a pioneer in motorsports photography, Hunter won close to 100 awards, and was best known for his black- and-white photographic work. Many of his best photos captured the legends of NASCAR.
In 1967, Hunter was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for photography, and one of his images remains in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Hunter is survived by his wife, Jean A. Hunter: daughter, Donna H. Franklin; and granddaughter, Marie R. Franklin.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Hope your family will keep your photos in the public eye for us old school race fans to remember. If a family member reads this, I would love to purchase some of the old stuff.I collect 60's70's Racing memorabilia. Anything paper related. Not newsprint though.Kenny
