Aric Almirola hasn't driven a race car in nearly two months and hasn't raced on a road course in 10 months, but he'll tackle Infineon Raceway this weekend in Dale Earnhardt Inc.’s No. 8 Chevrolet for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
Almirola has yet to drive a Sprint Cup car on a road course, and he only has one career road-race start in one of NASCAR’s three national series. Last August, he finished 11th for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Montreal Busch Series race.
"I'm not going to sugar coat the degree of difficulty – it's going to be a tough race," Almirola said.
Almirola, who shares the No. 8 entry with Mark Martin, has simple goals for this weekend.
"My plan is simple – to stay on the pavement and not make too many mistakes," Almirola said. "I need to be patient and not overdo it in the turns. It's all about feeling comfortable in a new environment."
To prepare for this weekend, Almirola received lessons from veteran road racer Chris Cook and tested at Virginia International Raceway recently.
"I just want to run a smart race and get as many owner points as I can for DEI and the Army," Almirola said. "I have spent a lot of time preparing for this race."
Almirola is also scheduled to run next week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
