Allmendinger best in second Cup practice

DARLINGTON, S.C. - Red Bull Racing's AJ Allmendinger posted the fastest lap in Thursday's second Sprint Cup practice session at Darlington Raceway, topping the speed chart at 178.679 mph.
Hendrick Motorsports' Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second fastest at 178.640 mph followed by Bill Davis Racing's Dave Blaney at 178.620 mph.
Joe Gibbs Racing's Kyle Busch and Roush Fenway Racing's Greg Biffle completed the top five fastest speeds.
Sixth was Johnny Sauter, who is driving the No. 70 Haas CNC Racing entry this weekend for the third time in four races.
Furniture Row Racing's Joe Nemechek was seventh fastest followed by Sterling Marlin, who is driving the No. 40 Chip Ganassi Racing Dodge in place of the injured Dario Franchitti.
Roush Fenway Racing's Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Inc.'s Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top-10 fastest speeds.
Haas CNC's Scott Riggs and Gillett Evernham Motorsports' Patrick Carpentier both hit the wall during the session, but only Riggs will be forced to a backup car.
Sauter will also go to a backup car for Saturday's race.
The next practice for the Dodge Challenger 500 begins at noon EDT Friday followed by final practice at 2 p.m. EDT. Qualifying starts at 5:15 p.m. Friday with race coverage set for 7 p.m. Saturday.
