Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. has removed his name from the Alabama Motorsports Park project, according to the Mobile (Ala.) Press Register.
 
The project, which includes an oval track and road course, is scheduled to open in 2012 – more than two years later than the original plan   – according to the track’s website.
 
Alabama Motorsports Park is owned by Gulf Coast Entertainment, and Earnhardt Jr., his sister Kelley Earnhardt Elledge and brother Kerry Earnhardt were part of the project.
 
"Dale is focusing on racing, and his sponsor demands have gone up incredibly," Bill Futterer of PSE-3 and Futterer Partners said told the newspaper. "We have agreed not to extend his personal services agreement."
 
Futterer said "We're not upset, and they are not angry."
 
Futterer's marketing firm is working on what had been called “Alabama Motorsports Park, A Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway.”
 
Gulf Coast Entertainment had agreed in February to purchase Memphis Motorsports Park, but the deal with Dover Motorsports Inc., was extended in July because Gulf Coast “continues to seek financing,” a news release from Dover Motorsports said.

    MSP, Do you know anything about this? I remember reading something, probably when they were talking about buying Memphis Motorsports Park, and something about it didn't sound right. I told my husband then I hoped Jr, Kerry and Kelly weren't getting into some mess.

    I cant believe in this economy that they are still trying to get money for this project.
    Its a $640 million investment. They have had nothing but setbacks for the last 3 years because of the response to the Corps of Engineers objections. The area includes wetlands and gopher tortoises, a threatened
    species which has been the concern of everyone. I dont know why anyone would want to build any more road courses in Alabama with Barber Motorsports Park there. Plus, why build another track in the Talladega Market. They would never get a Cup date. Ever.

    I'm a Dale Jr. fan. I just think that in the last couple of years he has spread himself a little thin. With Wiskey River and the time he has to spend with sponsers not to mention what we don't know about. I think that he needs to focus on the time every weekend at the track to improve with the TEAM. His crew chief and Rick Hendrick should demand it of him.

    I don't think hendrick gives jr. subpar cars at all but I do think he has let jr. down. He should have never changed crew chiefs with one not proven as a full time crew chief. Lance may be proven in nationwide series as is Dale jr. but not in cup.

    Why does Junior have older cars than anyone else? If it was not for bad luck he would have no luck at all. I know I am disgusted at all the bad luck he has been having, it is real puzzling. Many drivers have side business, I do not think it is Whiskey River, etc. is his problem. I am glad he is out of the raceway thing, it never felt right to me.

    I'm with #14. I heard Lance is starting to build new cars, and it started with Indy. I don't understand how 3 teams can build new cars and one can't. That doesn't make sense to me. Also, I heard that some of these cars have became just nothing but sheet metal for sale to buy. So I don't know how Junior is getting old and outdated cars when they are cutting up cars and making them into sheetmetal.

    That's not true at all. How do explain a win and 10 Top 5s and 16 Top 10s last year. It isn't the cars, that's just an excuse. The car they brought to Indy and Pocono was a chassis made up by the engineers to Dales driving style. He hasn't been in OLD cars.

    They have over 60 cars in the shop. The COT went full time in 2008. Cars dont race just for a year. Jeff had a favorite chassis number for years. They built a new car for Indy from Dales input on how he likes to drive. That's all they meant by him getting a new car.

    Rick Hendrick stated in a interview that dale Jr was running some of the first cot cars but it was because Dale Jr was telling Tony Eury Jr that he thought they were good cars and liked the feel. The cars there running now is what they call there standard Hendrick chassis with the Lance led team hanging there own bodies the interview was on Sirius with Dave Moody.

    I'm not sure, but I think what Lance was talking about when he said old cars was they were the ones Tony built. Someone said he was setting them up like he did at DEI. Lance, starting with the Indy car is setting them up the Hendrick way.

    Lance did say that Jr. needed new cars and he also said it took a month to build them and they were stuck with the older ones until they can build some more and that it took a month to build. As far as Whiskey River goes, that is an investment that Jr. needs to keep! RACHINGHCR is so clueless that it is not even funny! JEALOUS BIG TIME OF DALE, JR! I cant believe people can blame it on the car or Dales input to the crew chief. He could have won the Championship if he kept doing what he was doing.

    If Jr. can't drive the cot car then how was he 3rd in points last year. Jr. can drive as well or better than many drivers that are in the race each week. Look at JR.'S record, if he needs to quit then I guess we should just run about 12 cars each week.

    I’m sure a lot of handling issues come from the “no more testings” at tracks the cup series are racing on… That has to be a really big factor, especially for teams with new drivers/crew chiefs who have never worked together. It will take time to get the notes that they need. (Then those crew chiefs can take their notes and flee the organization that enabled them to be highly knowledgeable) NOTE: I liked seeing the mention of Corps of Engineers. My brother was once a Major General serving as director of environmental programs for the Corps of Engineers.

    I feel sorry for Junior it has become painfully obvious that his decision to go to Hendrick was a big mistake. In his haste to get away from Theresa Earnhardt, he was willing to accept all the promises that Rick Hendrick had to offer, which were plenty to get him to sign on the dotted line.     Harvick is a joke. 9 years and only 11 wins and 3 of those years he went win less. He is not the driver RC thought he was when he took Srs place.
