Sep 21, 2009 at 2:44 PMI almost turned off the race myself even though I have been watching since it has been televised. The fake "debris" cautions and a very poorly broadcast race was a real turnoff for me. If you depended totally on the TV broadcast, there was no way you would know what was happening in the race. ABC earned the poor ratings.

Sep 21, 2009 at 3:04 PMBRILLIANT move - - delay the start of the race till an HOUR AFTER -- the start of the football games - - THAT will certainly gain new fans & viewers ! Let everyone get fully engrossed in the football games and THEN, start the race ???? I didn't bother switching over and I've been a fan since the late 50's. I remember the 12:05 starting times at Dover etc - - Made sense - - What were they WAITING for -- California "fans" who don't have TiVo - - ?

Sep 21, 2009 at 3:52 PMActually with 100 laps to go the race was pretty exciting HOWEVER the coverage brought you by ABC/ESPN S**KS!!! Too many commericals, the same ones over and over. You missed some of the pit stops, you don't break in during the caution. they nearly missed it when Kahne blew up. The only thing they did right this time was, they didn't miss a restart like they did at Richmond. Seriously ABC is making fox's coverage not look so bad. Get better camera angles around the track too.

Sep 21, 2009 at 4:02 PMLike lots of NASCAR fans, I was watching an NFL regular season football that started at 1 pm instead of watching a meaningless hour of NASCAR pre-show so they could get in more commercials before they drop the rag. The later the start, the worse it's going to be. When the game was over, I checked out the race but there didn't seem to be that much going on so I started watching the second game which turned out to be a lot more interesting (Bears & Broncos).
Report as AbuseWhen NASCAR comes to Charlotte in a few weeks I'll be there but now that they adopted the Chase format and if your driver is not in it, what's the point in watching anything other than the highlights? Is it worth 4-5 of your time when it seem like half the time you're watching the same commercials over and over and over and over again?

Sep 21, 2009 at 5:15 PMAfter all, Cryle was in the race, if not the chase. When you come back to a caution during the commercials, people tend to not want to bother to watch the race. You can watch all the plays in football, so why not watch football? Especially if football was already on when the race started.

Sep 21, 2009 at 8:16 PMToo bad on the audience. Thought maybe things were starting to look up as audiences increased the last 4 races. Worst thing is that the 21% drop is comparing apples to apples (last year's race which was also pitted against the NFL vs this year's race), so you can't discount it as only a drop against the NFL game. Also I'm counting at least 3 of this year's teams not being operational next year (one ea from RPM, Roush and now RCR) due to losing sponsors. Unfortunately we haven't seen the end of that either. Bottom line, the days of excess are over.

Sep 21, 2009 at 8:19 PMCurrently I don't have cable TV and without it I can't get KABC 7, even though I live in the heart of Orange County Ca. I have a feeling the digital switch over had something to do with the bad numbers.
Report as AbuseWith that being said, I think a secondary issue is that NASCAR has to figure out a way to make the races more unpredictable. If I can't watch a race for some reason, I usually know the outcome never the less. For the last 3 years especially if your not Hendrick, Roush, or Joe Gibbs racing your a also run for the most part. That needs to change.
To hear NASCAR fans speculating when Jeff Gordon will step down and who will assume his throne in the 24 car sounds too much like F1 fans and press speculating the about the drivers for Ferrari.

Report as AbuseThe network jumping does not help but aside from that there are two bigger issues for the reduced viewer ratings.
The over abundance of commericals is a big problem. So much of the race is missed due to the commericals and you don't get that with the other sports. They could just make the cautions longer and show commericals then but not during actual race time.
The other issue is the COT itself. The car still needs some work as it still makes for some pretty boring racing at times and on some tracks. Which also has to do with some of the ticket sales lose the past couple years.
Yet NASCAR don't care about any of the important things to the fans, they are totally sponsor focused. They think the fans are too stupid to see that the entire race is one huge sponsorship show everywhere you look with sponsor logos, labels, and names displayed in every single camera shot.

It's almost like clockwork. Nascar can not compete with the NFL. It's a different animal as the NFL has TV time outs built into the game and the fans never miss a play.

Sep 23, 2009 at 12:19 AMAgree with most. I once could not leave the tv afraid I would miss something in the races. Now I glance at it every once in awhile and usually watch the end if a Hendrick car isn't up front. Just no reason to watch the race. See the highlights after the race and on other shows. Can get a lot done in 3-4 hrs of not watching the race.Even the Chase is boring this year. Just give the Championship to a Hendrick driver and let the drivers really race for wins the rest of the year and not have the other drivers drive so carefully they may not interfere with the Chase drivers. And one other thing- the announcing is just boring. Where is the excitement in their voices. This isn't golf- it's racing.
