ABC’s overnight ratings for Dover Cup race fall 6.9 percent
By SceneDaily Staff
Monday, September 28, 2009
ABC’s broadcast of Sunday’s AAA 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover International Speedway earned a 2.7 overnight rating from Nielsen Media Research, Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports.
The rating from the nation’s largest television markets is 6.9 percent lower than the 2.9 ABC earned overnight for the race in 2008 but 8 percent higher than the 2.5 ABC earned overnight for the previous week’s opener of the Chase For The Sprint Cup at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Sep 28, 2009 at 5:52 PMTo me there's a lot of reasons that NASCAR ratings are down. Brian France and his bunch of clowns. The uncertainty of a standard starting time. The new car prevents any real racing. The cookie cutter tracks is boring. The races are too long. Too many TV ads. The announcers are boring especially either of the Waltrip Clowns, and Rusty Wallace. There is nothing exciting about the new car except the safety for the drivers.
Report as AbuseNASCAR is nothing but a round ring instead of the square one used for Wrestling! What a joke NASCAR has become and boring!

Sep 28, 2009 at 7:14 PMWas it only me who noticed that for about the last 60 laps or so, including THREE caution periods, there was absolutely NO break aways for commercials on ABC's coverage ??? Did I imAGINE THAT ??? - -
Report as AbuseI kept waiting for the break but - - - Maybe I missed something but - I kept standing each time I expected a break and - -none ever CAME !!!! ??? Maybe I missed something but - - I kept waiting and waiting and - -they went straight thru the last 69 laps,-- (that's when I tuned in- was watching football before,- they don't change the points, there) --- ABC stayed with the coverage, including three cautions, and -the post race interviews, AND the Victory Lane interview withOUT - -going to a commercial -- now, - THAT--is WAAAAY more telling than the empty seats and the long time old fart fans (Since 1958 for "ME") disgust in the un-needed "changes"!
I have given up my seats at Dover(18 straight years), Michigan, Pocono, and, yes -even Bristol--since Brian's "CHANGES" to eliminate tradition, and the teams' ability to control and adjust their race cars!!
Teams going under -team sponsors leaving - Cup teams overunning the Sportsman and Truck divisions, and now - even Network TV ADS disappearing and, Brian is still HAPPY with what he and Helton have wrought ???? And they think MAYFIELD is on drugs ???

I'll stick with 15 min. of highlights and find something better to do with my time on a beautiful afternoon than watch the same 5-10 commercials 5-10 times an hour with a few race breaks thrown in. Why doesn't ABC do the split screen like they did for Indycar?

Sep 28, 2009 at 8:32 PMNASCRAP ruined racing a long time ago. All they have now is a show, and not a very good one. The ratings was way down, TV viewing was way down, and there were thousands of empty seats. And watching TV on a Sunday afternoon is a waste of a good day. And after a few minutes of the start of the race and then all the commercials. Why watch. Tape it and just fast forward thru the highlights. NASCRAP is going down, fast.

Report as AbuseLets see the percentage drop rather than hiding it probably under Brain Frances orders. If last week dropped 22% and this week the drop was much larger maybe France ought to be concerned with his mickey Mouse chase show.
Whoops, that's giving NASCRAP to much credit to compare it to Mickey Mouse.

Sep 28, 2009 at 9:25 PMSame ones win and in top 10. Car gets in front then he can't be passed. People like to pull for an underdog but they don't stand a chance with the up front cars. So no need to watch. Just catch the highlights and that is enough. There is only one thing I know that would make me watch again......Jr. winning. And that does not look like a good chance this year. There are thousands of JR. fans that are more his fans and not race fans. So part of the reason ratings have dropped. Guess can just check back in 2010.

With Cup drivers ok here comes Mark let him Drive by or here comes Jimmie lets let him drive by.

I wonder if JJ is jealous that they show Chad more than they show him; that they interview Chad more than they interview him; that Chad makes the cover of the mags. instead of him; that tv always talks to Chad and not him. Sep 29, 2009 at 10:13 AMI alway's thought FOOTBALL was one word, but no way in H**l am I going to waste a day inside watching either one, nfl,or nascar. We play football on sunday's,and have a party OUTSIDE! We tape the race, and go through the highlight's later! Most of the time you can see it in 5 min. or less on the Sport's Report! Like most of you have said, the first 50 lap's,then it's play ball! I don't know what planet France is on,but this is only going to get worse! As far as going to a race! They would have to pick me up in a chopper, take me to a jet,put me where France sit's,with all the suit's,and then, they might not be able to keep me awake! The car's are safe, the wall's are safe, the car's s**k,so there go your rating's! "REAL" STOCK CAR RACING HAS LONG BEEN A THING OF THE PAST! These little George Jetson car's are for the crapper! Just like the nfl. The Q.B.'s should all have to wear dresse's! You can't touch one or is a penalty! H**l you can't even celebrate after a score! They all can bite me! Who do they think is paying for all of this!

Report as AbuseBut...most races are no longer than the average football or baseball game yet you do not see a billion commercials during the action of those events. Waaaaay too many commercial breaks during racing that it chases viewers away and the COT still needs work so it can be racier for more exciting racing. Truck & Nationwide are better to watch and soon they will ruin Nationwide too.
It had been pretty nice so far this year for it not to be the "Jimmie" show ALL the time, there are 42 other drivers out there and many of us get tired of only hearing "Jimmie, Jimmie, Jimmie" week after week. He may be good but give it a rest already.

Sep 29, 2009 at 11:50 AMI KNOW HOW TO FIX NASCAR! instead of paying points at the end of the race you pay those points plus 5 points to lead a lap 5 points for the most laps led, and you pay points at the halfway mark, 43 for the leader, 42 for second, 41 for 3rd and so on down to 1 point for last, now it doesnt have to be this format of points, but this running around for 300 laps, and letting people go when they catch you has got to stop, unfortunatly France is to busy counting his money to worry about poor ratings, or poor racing. get a clue, watch a nationwide race, or better yet a camping world east or west race, but the best is the modified series, when the green flag waves, nobody lets someone else go around them unless they just have to. Big Bill or Bill Jr would fix this problem, but they aint here so the networks will just have to lump it, Brian cant be bothered, he and Mr. Drysdale have to go roll around in the vault!

Sep 29, 2009 at 3:35 PMTV ratings down? Could it possibly be that the ratings had been high due to all the "whats cool now" crowd? Maybe they have moved on to their next big find thus lowering the ratings. The real race fan is probably still here watching. I will say that the races are rather boring, drivers getting out of the way of chase drivers, chase drivers not willing to risk a DNF for a win. I hate the chase due to bringing drivers that had ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE OF WINNING A CHAMPIONSHIP even with the points leader, but it DOES make it more exciting than having some driver 250 points ahead and cruising to the championship. But I have always watched racing for the competition of the current race at hand.
