ABC earns 3.0 overnight rating for California Cup race
By SceneDaily Staff
Monday, October 12, 2009
ABC’s broadcast of Sunday’s Pepsi 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race from Auto Club Speedway in California earned a 3.0 overnight Nielsen Media Research rating from the nation’s largest television markets, Street and Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily reports.
The figure isn’t directly comparable a 2008 event since the Cup series raced at Charlotte on the same weekend last year, earning a 3.5 overnight rating, but it was the highest overnight rating for any of the first four races this season in the Chase For The Sprint Cup. ABC had earned 2.5 overnight for the Chase kickoff in New Hampshire, 2.7 for Dover and 2.6 for Kansas. Auto Club Speedway was hosting a Chase race for the first time by virtue of a date swap with Atlanta.

Oct 12, 2009 at 3:16 PMWe usually do watch the do Cup races, so we're probably not the right people to count ratings with if they were looking for a gain in viewership. But, here in Nebraska...the 12-17 inches of snow and 25 degree cooler than normal temperature pretty much kept people inside for the weekend. Nobody was out picking pumpkins with their kids, that's for sure!!! Good race, Mark! We're cheering for you to get back on top of the points race next week. :)

Oct 12, 2009 at 4:54 PMmaybe they should blackout the race in the local area if it doesn't sellout like the NFL does...perhaps too much tv has hurt the sport...we used to hunger just to see a race...from the 10 minutes we used to get, to the all affair we get now...hey it's not the Super Bowl every race day...

Oct 12, 2009 at 9:01 PMIf they black out the races that don't sell out, they can pretty much guarantee 30+ races will be blacked out. Wonder what that would do for the already low ratings.
Report as AbuseWith that philosophy the networks won't renew and we won't get to watch any of the races.

Oct 12, 2009 at 9:28 PMA blackout would backfire big time. A blackout would cause fans to boycott other races of tracks owned by the same company. The local citizens would also not be nice to the out of town visitors regarding prices.

Oct 12, 2009 at 9:45 PMI'd like to give ABC credit, the Kevin Harvick piece they ran during the pre-race show actually resembled journalism, and gave real insight of how dysfunctional Kevin's relationship with Richard has become.

Oct 12, 2009 at 11:06 PMI normally didn't like ESPN and ABC coverage of the races, but I really liked these at California this weekend. THought they did a great job for once. Hope they keep it up. I was dreading the ESPN/ABC share of the coverage earlier in the year, but like I said this weekend was great, plus really good racing, so hope it keeps up.
