7 reasons to watch the Coca-Cola 600: No. 1 - Memorial Day celebrations

One of the best things about the Coca-Cola 600 is its date. Its longtime slot on Memorial Day weekend means fans both at the track and at home can fire up the grill, put on some steaks, burgers, chicken or whatever, and sip a couple of cold drinks while enjoying the race, all with this delicious thought in mind: “I don’t have to work tomorrow.”
It goes without saying the reason many workers have Memorial Day off is to commemorate the sacrifices members of our military have made in keeping us safe. One of my favorite parts of the Coca-Cola 600, especially in person, is the annual prerace salute to the military staged by Lowe’s Motor Speedway. It’s always touching and always worth watching.
For the perfect Memorial Day weekend, find a Memorial Day parade in your area and show up just to say thanks.
Then Sunday afternoon, fire up that grill and get ready for a good time. You can sleep in on Monday.
