Busch blasts by Johnson for seventh Cup win of 2008

JOLIET, Ill. – Kyle Busch dominated much of the LifeLock.com 400 Saturday night, but he needed the help of David Gilliland to score his seventh Sprint Cup victory of the season.

Busch relinquished the lead with 17 laps remaining in the race to Jimmie Johnson but after Gilliland blew an engine, Busch was able to beat Johnson in a two-lap dash to the finish at Chicagoland Speedway.

“I got to thank these guys – I gave up on them,” said Busch, who had told his Joe Gibbs Racing crew after Johnson passed him that he could not win the race. “I gave up on myself. I didn’t think I could do that. I don’t know how I did that.”

Busch, the series points leader, led 165 of the 267 laps at Chicagoland Speedway. With seven victories, his 70 bonus points entering the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup would give him a 50-point edge on the rest of the field if the playoff round started next week. There are seven races remaining until the Chase begins.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Johnson placed second, while Richard Childress Racing’s Kevin Harvick was third with Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle in fourth and JGR’s Tony Stewart in fifth.

The race was the first NASCAR Sprint Cup event at night at Chicagoland Speedway, which installed lights around the 1.5-mile oval in the offseason.

The win marked the second time this season where Busch won two races in a weekend – he won the Craftsman Truck Series race at Atlanta in March and then followed that with a Cup win two days later. Busch also won two races last November at Phoenix when he won truck and Busch Series events.

The Sprint Cup Series has its final weekend off of the season next week before finishing the year with 17 consecutive weekends of racing.

    It's not who drives the car like Clint Bowyer said a Monkey could drive that car and win. Yea ok so he was talking about the 20 in the Nationwide series but it could also apply to the 18 car in the Cup Series.

    it doesn't apply to the 18 car in the sprint series because only one driver is driving it to victory lane! you can have the best car in the world but you still have to be a good driver to win. the jealousy continues! kyle busch is the best so give it up people.

    UNBELIEVABLE Chrissie!?!?!.... I mean it's fascinating AND depressing at the same time to witness how a certain segment of fans react to what is taking place this year. Kyle's moves in the last two laps tonight were HISTORICAL! REAL race-fans across the nation had their jaws on the floor witnessing what happened. YET!!! Certain fans would rather look for EXCUSES to rationalize their hatred than give credit where it is due. I can only imagine how that pathetic philosophy is applied in their real lives. I've said it before and I'll say it AGAIN... Fans who believe that Toyota and Kyle Busch have an "UNFAIR" advantage are small-minded ignorant COWARDS. Sound HARSH? Well, how do you think your conspiracy theories sound to the people that work their tails off over at JGR?? Have some dignity people. Please!

    I think Kyle Bush is the best nascar driver ever and I thank he has prove that tonight. He makes little Dale look like a jr. So give it up you die hard people.Bush is a winner. Now enjoy the ride.

    Jealous? I don't think so. Admit shrub is the best driver ever..never! Is he a good driver, I have to admit he is. Does he have a good car? You bet. Is he a winner? Evidently. Do I have to enjoy the ride? Not on your life. Will I waste my time calling KB fans names? Don't make me laugh. Again I will have to admit, for me to be rooting for JJ is pretty sad. And he didn't listen to me. I tried telling him to remember what KB said, which was "I will do what ever it takes to win a race" after he had spun someone to win. JJ you should have taken him out when you had the chance, I know you know how. KB would have done to you in a heart beat.

    Kyle Busch is INCREDIBLE. His "bump draft" move on JJ was soooo awesome and Old Skool! The kid keeps winning, jaws keep dropping and the Kyle haters keep coming up with pathetic excuse... Wake up people, Kyle is dominating because he's good, he's smart and he not afraid to push someone out of his way to win! I am still laughing... WOW!

    Incredible season this kid is having. I just can't tell which is better-watching Kyle win so many races or reading posts from Jr. fans whining with such fervor. Gotta give Kyle a big thumbs up for sticking it in the faces of his detractors much the same way a certain kid driving a rainbow car used to a few years ago. Nothing would be better than watching Kyle win another 5+ races and win the Cup.

    Why do the KB fans always assume that those whining with fervor are Jr. fans?? I never let when I post on who I cheer for, it's not Jr. I still don't like KB as a person. As a driver he does have talent but as a person, he has a lot to learn. He needs to take whatever advice that was given to Kurt during his tumultuous years and learn from it. although I doubt he would listen to Kurt, too much bad blood still between the brothers due to Kyle wrecking both of them last year. You didn't see Kyle congratulate his brother for winning at Daytona. Wonder why. KB needs to mature before he can ever be considered a legend.

    Were u there the entire day following Klye n Kurt around to know if any congratulations were given? Did you tap in on any phone calls? You know nothing on that subject!!! Kyle is 23-he isn't like all the other drivers-he is his own person with his own personality.

    Hey Nim Nut, I was referring to the Post race interview with Kurt. His brother just won the race, you would have thought he could have congratulated him in front of millions of people. He chose not to. I suppose you don't know any more on the subject either. That assumption was stupid, just like all your other I Love Kyle comments. Like others have said Miss Roll, you were on another bandwagon last year. True Nascar fans stick with their favorite driver, winning or not. They don't jump ship to whomever is winning the most in a year. As far as I know, all people are their own person with their own personality. Unless you know some of them that may have an alter ego and I think you are one of them.

    OK move on to the next subject. After reading all Rolly Pearly posts, you can tell she knows JACK about NASCAR. Scene daily has been around for how long and she just subscribes this year, YEAH RIGHT! From what I have read, the KB fans always accuse the Jr Nation of making excuses. Rolly Pearly must be taking lessons from them because she always has an excuse for her posts. How pathetic is that.
