CONFESSIONS OF A NASCAR FAN

I’d forgotten I ordered one until it showed up in the mail. A week or two before, I followed a cyber-link where I input my address to have Cabarrus (N.C.) County send me a free copy of their visitors guide. Finding the guide in my mailbox was like finding a $20 bill in the back pocket of my dirty jeans – a treasure excitedly rediscovered.

The last time I was in North Carolina was for my brother’s wedding. Not only was I hugely and uncomfortably four weeks shy of giving birth, but I also still had yet to connect with my inner redneck. I was completely oblivious to NASCAR, so the biggest attraction to the state was my brother and his bride-to-be.

In retrospect, it may have been a good thing. After viewing the visitors guide, there is a strong possibility if I had been a tenth of the race fan I am now, I might have been distracted by all that is NASCAR, and inadvertently missed my brother’s nuptials. OK, maybe not the ceremony but the rehearsal dinner for sure.

Everyone knows North Carolina is the home base for much of the NASCAR industry. And the vast majority of teams in NASCAR’s top three series have their shops in Cabarrus County. Those who are residents of the area may think, “Well sure, it’s all here.” But some of us outsiders just need it laid out in a colored, glossy pocket-size way (aka a visitors guide).

Yes, the track is located there and that alone could account for at least an entire weekend of fun. But, the listing of Sprint Cup race shops in the area is like a Hollywood map to the stars for race fans. And if that weren’t enough for one county, apparently there is a NASCAR theme park, abundant shopping, scenic golf courses, and I could pan for gold. Technically, a week in Cabarrus could make me a well-dressed, prospecting, redneck golfer. I can live with that.

My Cabarrus visitors guide has certainly enlightened me to the insane amount of NASCAR available in the area. I can imagine the places outlined in the guide are only the tip of the proverbial racing iceberg. I’ll keep my guide in a handy place for when the time comes to schedule a trip to Lowe’s Motor Speedway. But one thing is for sure – I will venture beyond the track and experience NASCAR in the multitude of ways available only in Cabarrus County.
