Kyle Busch became the first driver in NASCAR history to pull off the “triple” – running a race in each of NASCAR’s three national series at three different tracks – in three different states.
Balancing a busy schedule of practices, qualifying and racing, Busch was whisked around the country via jets and helicopters with the hope that he could start all three races and avoid any weather troubles.
He and his entourage pulled off the feat, though the weekend was unsuccessful by Busch’s standards – as any weekend without a victory usually is.
On Friday, June 6, he practiced and qualified his Sprint Cup car at Pocono Raceway in the Pennsylvania mountains – at one point running through the garage to the media center in order to fulfill his postqualifying media obligations – then flew to Texas Motor Speedway for the Craftsman Truck Series race.
In that event, he started last (thanks to missing qualifying) but drove to a second-place finish with a shot at race winner Ron Hornaday on a green-white-checkered restart.
He returned to Pocono to practice his Cup car the following morning, logging the third-fastest time. But with just minutes left before the session ended, Busch spun off Turn 3 and wrecked near pit road, causing the team to pull out the backup car.
Busch logged the 16th-fastest time in his backup during the next practice, then bolted for transportation that took him to the Nationwide Series race at Nashville Superspeedway.
He ran as high as fourth place, but was forced to pit under the green flag with a flat tire, thwarting any chance at a win. Busch finished three laps down in 20th, then again ran through the garage to hop a jet and returned to Pocono, arriving back at the track around 1 a.m.
Busch fared poorly in the Sprint Cup race at Pocono, crashing early in the race. He returned to action many laps down, then spun near the end of the race. He finished 43rd.
