When Kyle Busch thinks about his 10 victories across NASCAR’s three national series this year, his mind quickly turns to missed opportunities.
“It’s pretty cool … that we’ve got 10 wins across the board,” he said. “But there’s plenty of wins that we missed out on already this year, you know.”
Busch estimates there are two Sprint Cup races, roughly six Nationwide races and three Craftsman Truck events that he should have won but failed to for various reasons.
“It’s frustrating when you don’t win the races that you feel like you could have won, and yet it’s still pretty cool to win as many as we have won,” he said. “We’ll just keep going throughout the rest of the year and see how many there are possible.”
Already only four wins away from tying Kevin Harvick’s multi-series record, Busch has set his sights higher.
“I feel like there’s a chance to probably go for about 20 wins this year,” he said. “If we could, that would be pretty awesome.”
On the Cup side, Busch proclaimed before the season that four Cup victories would be a good goal for this year. But he had already accomplished that feat by the time he arrived at Pocono, leaving him wondering about new goals.
The post-1972 modern-era record is 13 wins in a season, set by Richard Petty in 1975 and tied by Jeff Gordon (1998).
“That’s probably a little bit out of reach, but we’ll give it a shot and see what we can do, see if we can get there,” Busch said.
