BRISTOL,
Tenn. –
Scott Wimmer finished sixth in the
Nationwide Series race at
Bristol Motor Speedway just a day after finding out he won’t be back with
Richard Childress Racing next year.
So was this the first in a series of auditions?
Nah, says Wimmer.
“I don’t know that I have to audition anymore – I’ve been in this sport long enough,” Wimmer said Friday night. “People know what I can do and what I’ve done in the past and what I’ve done now.
“You’re going to have bad races and good races. Fortunately, we had a good one.”
Wimmer’s resume includes 106 Cup races as well as 163 races in
NASCAR’s No. 2 series. He has a win this year at
Nashville, the only win for a team that captured the owners title last season with Wimmer and
Jeff Burton sharing the ride.
“It’s hard not racing full time and running part time and trying to win and trying to run up front,” said Wimmer, who won five times in the then-Busch Series for
Bill Davis Racing. “Last year we were able to win the owners championship with a lot of consistency. We had a lot of top-fives and top-10s.
“This year, we have struggled a little bit but we’re still getting top-fives and top-10s and wins and we just need to be a little bit better. I’m excited with what I’ve done here at RCR and it’s a great group of guys. I’ve enjoyed working with them.”
Childress declined comment Friday about Wimmer’s situation, saying an announcement would be made next week.
But for Wimmer, he will start talking to other teams.
“I just found out Thursday," said Wimmer, who has driven for RCR the last two years and has 10 top-10 finishes in 17 races this season. “So I have to get out there and start talking to people. I know there are some rides that are still open for next year.
“It’s hard to get things lined up with sponsors and teams and teammates and all that stuff.”
Burton said Wimmer has been an integral part of the RCR organization.
“Scott’s done a really good job not only in the Nationwide car but in a lot of testing,” Burton said. “He’s been a guy that’s been willing to do whatever the company has asked him to do. He’s put in a lot of hard days at race tracks when nobody knew he was there.
“He certainly wasn’t doing it for the glory or the paycheck, he was doing it because he was committed to our company. He drove more races than I did last year and we won a championship. He’s done a great job.”
