MEXICO CITY — Polesitter Colin Braun isn't the only young driver who likely turned some heads during Saturday's qualifying session at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Steve Wallace, the 20-year-old son of Rusty Wallace, earned his career-best NASCAR road course starting spot and will roll off 12th in today's Corona Mexico 200.
“That was a good lap for our team," said Wallace, who is running the full Nationwide Series season in a Rusty Wallace Racing Chevrolet. "I don’t really have a road racing background, so to be able to come out here and be that fast is really cool."
Saturday marked only Wallace's fourth career qualifying attempt on a road course. His previous best road course start came last year at Canada’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, where he was 16th on the grid.
This time around, he wants more.
"No one remembers where you start," he said on Saturday. "So we’ve to concentrate on staying on course in tomorrow’s race and making sure that our Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS is there at the end."
