You won’t find driver Scott Wimmer on Linkedin.com, but in the NASCAR community, his peers know he will be out of work soon.
Despite 11 top 10s in 18 Nationwide Series races, including a win at Nashville in March, Wimmer will not be returning to Richard Childress Racing in 2009. He got the word last month that his time in the No. 29 Chevrolet is coming to an end.
Wimmer, 32, will now try to compile as many additional solid runs as he can in his limited schedule to increase his stock and help him land another ride. He was successful two weeks ago at Richmond, where he finished second. His next opportunity is in Saturday’s race at Dover International Speedway, site of his first victory six years ago.
“It’s been a while since I’ve won there, but it still feels great,” he said. “You feel like you know a little something more than somebody who hasn’t won there. The track has changed so much in the past few years, so I don’t know if my little tricks still apply. But a win gives you a lot of confidence.”
Besides his win, he has three other top-10 finishes at the track. In 11 starts, he has a solid 11.2 average finish.
His victory at Nashville, the sixth of his career, was his first for Childress since joining the team in 2006. Nashville Superspeedway, like Dover, is a concrete track. His car at Dover is the same he took to victory lane at Nashville.
“I always seem to run well on the concrete tracks of Dover, Nashville and Bristol and have had a lot of success on them,” said Wimmer, who helped the No. 29 team win the 2007 owner’s championship while splitting the ride with Jeff Burton. “I feel very comfortable on concrete tracks.”
Wimmer finished 12th at Dover in May, his 10th finish in the top 15 at the Monster Mile.
“It (Dover) is such a grueling race track,” Wimmer said. “It’s really hard, it’s physical to drive and it’s fast. I think it feels like the fastest place we go to. It’s got a lot of great characteristics.”
