Scott Wimmer is looking to sweep the Nationwide Series races at Nashville Superspeedway this year by adding a victory in Saturday's Federated Auto Parts 300 to go with his win in the March 22 Pepsi 300 at the track.
That would be quite an accomplishment, especially considering he’s a part-time driver this year.
Wimmer is racing in 22 of the 35 Nationwide races this year for Richard Childress Racing, and the two stops at Nashville’s 1.33-mile track are on his schedule. Wimmer's win in the March race was his first victory with RCR.
“The win at Nashville was long overdue for me and the Holiday Inn Racing team,” Wimmer said. “They really worked hard to get me a win last year, but we came up a little bit short. That was our third race together this year, and we were able to pull out that win.
“I always look forward to going to Nashville because it’s a great racing town. There is a lot of history there with the old speedway at the fairgrounds. It will be a night race this time, so hopefully we will get the setup right to have a strong run.”
Wimmer trailed Kyle Busch and teammate Clint Bowyer for much of the race in March, but Busch spun while leading, and Wimmer later passed Bowyer for the lead.
“We made our car better and better all day long,” Wimmer said. “We were good enough to run with the leaders, but I don’t know if we were good enough to win. Racing isn’t over until the last lap, and Kyle [Busch] had problems, and I was able to get by my teammate, who has been running strong all year.
“It felt really good to win, and I am sure that the same guys are going to be fast. Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch are the guys to beat, so hopefully we can go back there and run with them.”
Though the March race was Wimmer’s first Nashville win, he’s finished in the top 10 in seven of his eight starts there.
“I try to take care of my equipment,” Wimmer said. “I have seen so many guys run the car too hard and burn the car out. I just try to find a real steady pace and use the car up at the end of the race. It’s a tough race track. It has some characteristics from Dover and Bristol. It’s tricky to get around and easy to get in trouble. The key is to save the car for the end of the race.”
