LEBANON, Tenn. – NASCAR Nationwide Series car owner Rusty Wallace said he hopes to move his two-car team to the Sprint Cup Series in 2010. But the situation would have to be perfect.
Rusty Wallace Racing fields two Chevrolets, for Brendan Gaughan and Rusty’s son, Steve, in the Nationwide Series.
“Ideally, if all the moons lined up, I’d start in 2010,” Wallace said at Nashville Superspeedway, where the Nashville 300 will be held Saturday. “Two cars. I’d want Stephen and Brendan to go right in.”
But Rusty Wallace would need a partnership with an existing team in order to stock enough inventory of cars and engines. Also, RWR would need the right level of sponsorship.
Richard Childress Racing provided RWR with engines in the Nationwide Series, and Wallace said he’s had casual conversations about a Cup alliance with RCR.
“I’d definitely be looking at doing some type of technology merger with a team, and the one that makes the most sense is Childress,” Wallace said. “That’d be a quick way to get going.”
Wallace said his shop facilities in Mooresville, N.C. would be adequate for a Cup team. The team currently does its own bodies there and has a large fabrication area.
“I think we’ve got the facilities,” Wallace said. “We’re a little tight on square footage compared to some of the big shops. But when I talk to people and they look at our place, they go, ‘Oh, my God. You could run two Cup teams out of this shop so easy it’s unreal.’”
Gaughan has one year of Cup experience, running the 2004 season as Wallace’s teammate at Penske Racing. Steve Wallace, 21, is in his third full-time season in the Nationwide Series.
“I want to move up,” Rusty Wallace said. “My goal was to get Stephen up to speed. Looks like the crashing has finally stopped. The good finishes are happening. We’ve got all this year of Nationwide to go.
“Then I think it’s time, instead of getting stalled out in one series, to move up and do something different. I don’t care if people agree with you or don’t.”

Apr 11, 2009 at 2:50 PM8th and 13th in points so far is pretty good for those two. It would be nice if Rusty could pull this off. I would like to see two more Chevy teams out there if they could get into the top 35 and not worry about qualifying. The way RFR and Yates will be adding more Ford teams next year the need for more Chevy teams is even greater to compete with the Toyota's. RCR could use the dollars for more R&D and that is always a good thing too.

Apr 11, 2009 at 3:40 PMI don't see WHY you would want MORE Chevs out there, there are too many out there now. We need more Fords and Dodges, NOT Chevrolet's. There are already more Chevs than the Dodges and Fords put together. Also the way GM is going down the tubes, why would anyone want to keep running them? And at THAT level of racing it certainly isn't because they are cheaper to build, because they aren't at the top levels.

Apr 11, 2009 at 3:45 PMI just had a GREAT idea. Instead of the top 35 to be locked in. Make it TEN (10) from each of the 4 manufacturers locked in and the other three spots could be run for top speed to get in. Betcha THAT would even things out more in the whole scheme of things.

Apr 11, 2009 at 4:18 PMJim, Dodge just doesn't have their act together. They are stumbling on that new motor. The only one running it is Penske. Don't you think that the association Rusty has with Rodger that if that Dodge program was any good rusty would go to him first. And on your second comment, that is a good idea but don't give them any ideas/lol

Apr 11, 2009 at 6:02 PMNothing against the current driver lineup that Rusty has, but if he were to bring RWI to Cup, it'd probably be easier for him to find a sponsor if HE was a driver (granted, he likely doesn't want to go back if he could avoid it) than if these two drivers- one who hasn't really proven much in Nationwide racing, and one that was a pretty sub-par Cup driver- were his choice. I think Steve and Brendan have a lot of talent, but I don't think they'd be able to pull off the sponsorship needed for RWI to run two Cup teams next year.

Apr 11, 2009 at 6:32 PMI think they will be great in Nationwide. Especially if the Cup drivers don't compete for the Championship. If they go to Cup, they'll just be two more "also ran"s. I like what Rusty did with his Nationwide teams. Using only Nationwide drivers. Too bad Cup owners don't have Nationwide teams. I don't think Rusty should move up until one of his teams wins the Championship in Nationwide.

Apr 14, 2009 at 1:52 PMI love Rusty's quote "Looks like the crashing has finally stopped." That is only because everyone gives Steven an extra 10 feet of clearance. I can't imagine how much he is going to cost his old man in a Sprint Cup car.

If they try to push him around you watch the drivers that will be right there with him when he pushes back. And he WILL push back.
