LEBANON, Tenn. – David Ragan knows who his competition is. So as he watches the Nationwide Series standings, he discounts people who will not run the full season. Kevin Harvick leads the series standings, but he won’t be running this weekend at Nashville Superspeedway when the series enjoys its first standalone weekend. That could give Ragan an easy shot to ease up the standings a spot.
He’s fourth entering Saturday’s Pepsi 300, but Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards are also ahead of him.
Both should be tough this weekend. So, has Ragan gone to his teammate Edwards, winner of the last three Nashville races, to try to unearth his secret to success at the track?
“He’s just had good race cars and had good fortune,” Ragan said. “I think we’ve had good race cars equally as he has last year. We just haven’t had the good luck. We got wrecked here in the spring and I think we finished sixth or seventh in the fall. I think the key today is just having a good race car and not so much getting worried about that first or second practice.
“The track changes so much here with the amount of rubber that gets laid down from the first few laps we’ll take to the end of the race. We just have to stay focus on what we need to be focused on and that’s the last 50 or 60 laps of the race. I’m sure we’ll be talking some through practice.”
With two practices scheduled for Friday, Ragan said he expects the track to change quite a bit. While he plans to work on various aspects of his career, he expects the final laps to be the most crucial. The teams will then qualify at 11:05 a.m. EDT tomorrow and race at 3 p.m.
“I think the biggest thing is the last 30 minutes of that second practice and getting the car dialed in,” Ragan said. “The weather looks like it’s going to be great, so we’ll finally get a chance to qualify. We haven’t got to qualify too many times this year.
“Just kind of get back in the rhythm of things.”
